Another thing could be how green it is with the 100+ mm we had a few weeks back, don't know if that has an affect?

unfortunately sea temps a lot harder to get. The ECMWF reanalysis had sea surface temps in their model from 1981 onwards about the time that the GMS geostationary satellites started. NCEP do not have any sea surface temps in their reanalysis at all. Some ship reports had sea surface temps because I remember plotting them on weather maps in the 70s and 80s. All the ship reports that I have seen those coded groups seem to have been stripped out.

Will be interesting to see how hot it will get here in the next few days?
I can't find it in my diaries,a few years ago it got to 42C in Timaru, well at the airport and I can remember MS saying on their webpage for Timaru the amount of clothing requred was nothing.
I can remember that day. It was 38C in West Melton.

This paper suggests that SSTs were warmer than usual in the Tasman Sea in 1973, and summer 72/73 was the peak of a major La Nina event, which makes a warm Tasman likely that summer.

Is the Omakau reading of 41C at the moment legitimate?

Hell yeah. A NIWA employee parked his black car on an asphalt driveway for hours in the sun just to capture that moment. ;-)

On TV3 the presenter said Omakau just reached 40C, I’m thinking he didn’t check out if it was an above board reading before he announced that to NZ haha

Yes, the temperature got up to 40.3C at Levels, not 42C. I got up to 35.8C, not 38C.
Other interesting hot temperature on that day was Oamaru at 36.4C, Ashburton at 35.9C, ChCh at 35.9C and Dundedin at 35.2C.
The next day, the daytime temperature was only 14C at West Melton.

Looks as if it's a bit misty here, for the moment. Warmish days often begin like that :)

My efficiently insulated home must be keeping the warmth in overnight, and there's been little breeze here to get an air current through.

While the whole country has had a warm January, Central Otago and the MacKenzie district have been in a league of their own for heat. Alex is looking at about 18 days with temps hitting 30C+.

Been a hot one overnight, peaked at 22.3°C at 1.14am, never got below 21.4°C, between 85-90% Humidity, not a lot of fun. Humidity even higher now with drizzle on warm asphalt.

I think locations like South Auckland ,inland Waikato and the Hutt Valley have a good claim on being hot because of the high dewpoint temperature. 20C dewpoint is very significant on temperature.

I agree with you spwill.

We have been pushing 30 or getting 30 each day with a 21DP. Lows have been 19 or 20 each night with 95% humidity. Its no wonder the milk production in the area is crashing. Cows cannot 'dump' heat in these conditions and have become heat stressed to the max.

The feels like temp each day has been pushing mid 30's.

Stats for my station are to date this month:
Avg high 25.8

Max high 30.1

Days above 28 = 8, should be another today and that would make 5 in a row. Last 4 days have been 29.8, 29.2, 29.4, 29.0 all with the avg dew point at 19. The dew point at high temp is normally 21 or 22.

Avg low 16.5

Avg temp 20.7!!!

Temp from normal 3.8!!!

Avg dew point 17.8!!!

This to me is more than just normal hot.

Was a very warm night here also, min 21.2C. Looking similar tonight.

The benchmark month for Central Otago is January 1956 - in old units, Cromwell MWD averaged 70.8F and Alexandra 70.4F, giving departures from the then normals of 8.7F (!). As of the 28th Cromwell has averaged 21.74C (71.1F). Of the at least 3 Alex. sites, Alexandra CWS has averaged 21.41C (70.5F). I haven't got numbers for the other 2, but one of them (Alexandra, I59236) looks a bit warmer, going by the December numbers. Cromwell's average Tmax was over 29.4C.

Slow to warm up here this morning with it being only 20C at 9.30. I see the temp graph on MS for chch is bringing the the temp back more with only a high of 30 showing now.
