Only the very easten suburbs, I was in Linwood all day and it was 29C at 2pm... my point is how wildly off their forecasts are sometimes, I find the Metservice forecasts are more reliable but hey, talking about getting to 40C is very good click bait isn’t it...

Came very close. At least 28.4 today and similar last Thursday.

Record breaker in what way Razor? Are you saying hottest ever temperature recorded? Or highest January temp?

Would seem unlikely given the high cloud pushing in from the west

I think today is going to be really hard to predict, could be some odd very high temps but other places are going to fairly low with the cloud coming in...it's looking like Christchurch Aiport is going to smash it's previous highest monthly minimum temperature recorded back in January 1975 on 14.3C by around a full degree, there will be plenty of others too, NIWA's monthly summary is going to be a goodie jam packed with records both maximum and minimum...

Just cracked 35°C here with 35.1°C currently.
That is damn hot. Reminds me of living in Newman, in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
But at least there, everyone had air conditioning.
But it was also often 5-10°C warmer than this too.
But this is warm enough, thank you. Please go away now.

The high cloud cover is moving in from the north now with a NW Arch forming so we have reached our peak here of 32.7C. but I see down the road at Levels it was much hotter, which is a bit of a turn around as we are usually 3 or 4 degrees warmer. They peaked at over 34C.
This is the first proper N to NW we have had down here since moving here. The heat today, being a bit different from last week or so being more drier. 8)

I think Dunedin was tops today with 35C to finish off this thread of late January high temperatures?

Yes we could extend the thread to today, and then stop. It is still 30C at nearly 6pm in Chch and I personally experienced the rise to 35 earlier, but the southerly dragged up by Fehi is on its way! A 9C minimum tonight - a full 10C lower than most of the past two weeks. 8-o

That would be at the airport. Only a temp gauge there which I just found. Hardly an ideal placement.

What's wrong with placement, it's only a couple hundred metres from the ocean and lots of grass and bugger all buildings.
