Wanaka was a record for MS since records began in the 1970s

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Got as high as 30.6°C here, dewpoint 22.2° at the time. Quite uncomfortable.
Hoping it doesn't get too much hotter than that, or we have lower dewpoints if we do.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Can someone tell me what Hamilton’s January avg high temp is. I feel like it’s about 24? If so then is there a chance Hamilton will meet the 5 days of 5 degrees above avg high for a heat wave to be classed?

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Thanks Nev. So Hamilton Ruakura needs 29 or more 5 days in a row for a ‘heat wave’. I think 4 days will be achieved but not sure on the 5th day.

Note that NIWA use Hamilton Aero for their 'main-centre' temps and rainfall.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Not quite on topic, but it would be nice to know what the highest recorded NZ temperatures for each month are ... no easy way of doing that with standard access to CliFlo ... or perhaps NIWA has a list somewhere...?Nev wrote: ↑Sun 28/01/2018 07:40Yep. Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
In February 1998 Dargaville EWS averaged 23.0C (Tmax avge 28.7C, Tmin avge 17.2C). A site with the name abbreviated to "Auckland Regional Co" (alt 20m) claimed a 24.3C mean but I think that looks suspiciously high.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Swimming pool is now up to 31c and so doesn’t do anything to cool your body. Pretty sure we have never recorded more than 30 in the pool before.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Do you have something akin to solar heating? seems a lot warmer than I remember our pool ever getting up to.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Thanks RWood. I'm picking there will be some averages above 22C this January. The nights have been incredibly warm around NZ last couple of weeks.

He's the one fueling this whole heat wave thing in the media, time will tell I guess.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
The issue arises for multiple station or countrywide records - the standard CliFlo menus just give you individual station data, not consolidations - but Nev can probably do a direct SQL enquiry to the database ...?

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
I seem to recall the 850hpa temps in Feb 1973 were around 24-25C, with Tuesday and Wednesday getting to 20C at a push for Canterbury I’m thinking 38C will be around the maximum achievable temperature on those days...

Just spent the day up waiau and hanmer and while it's bloody hot the dry air(45%) is a change from down on the plans with it being 26C here in Rangiora with 70% humidity.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Christchurch radiosonde sounding for midday 7th Feb 1973 had 850 temp of 27 deg, surface temp 40 deg with dew point 2.5 deg. The NCEP reanalysis for that time only showed an 850 temp of 21 deg but then that is for grid spacing of 2.5 degrees
