There are high dewpoint temperatures next week as well, a humid week on the cards for much of NZ.
Current dewpoint in Auckland is 20C, temp 25C, fine conditions this afternoon after morning cloud and early morning showers.

The cloudy humid junk over the NI so far this month is resembling January 1956. But most of the SI was sunnier then and the greatest temperature anomalies were in Central Otago, South and Mid Canterbury. Dryness was also more widespread.

I seriously think the Christchurch January record of 35.9C back in 1979 could be under threat next Thursday if the current forecast 850hpa temps nudging 20C stay correct...

Could be wrong but I think Hamilton Airport has only exceeded 31C once since early 1998. March 2013 when a funny pocket of foehn heated air from the ESE came through mid afternoon.

Oh really? There’s been what I remember a few occasions in the last say 15 years where 30 and 31 has been recorded. But come to think of it yes hard to recall 32 or more. My station has a record temp of 31.9 in 2008. Think the station was in Hamilton east at that time, so urban. Think since it’s been here the max has been about 30.5 or maybe 31. I’d have to go digging for that.

Hamilton Aero recorded 31.0C in Jan 2008, but only managed 30.7C in March 2013. However, Ruakura recorded 32.6C in March 2013 and, not only is it the highest temp it has recorded since its all-time record of 34.7C in Dec 1935 since records began in 1906, but it is also the only time that either site has ever recorded 30.0C or more in March. Hamilton Aero's highest ever temp is 31.3C recorded in Jan 1975, Jan 1974 and Feb 1973 since records began in 1970.

Thanks for that info. Had always wondered when that 34.7 max I had seen quoted had occurred. And missed that Ruakura had gone that high that day in March 2013.

With this pattern there will be some high mean temperatures for January across NZ. Auckland minimums around 20C for the next week.

Creating a new topic for this, considering some areas are likely to break records.

GFS showing 34 at 4pm in Hamilton on Friday. I’ll believe that when I see it.

The humidity will make it feel much warmer than those temps suggest, high humidex values this week.

Don’t often see a forecast like this from MetService. That’s a warm week ahead

I'm wondering why the GFS forecast high temps in the north have dropped quite a bit as the 850mb temps this week are still modeled as high as 18C.

Friday is looking like the only day in the latter half of January to dip below 25C in Chch, at 23. The remainder of this week and into next looks to continually push at 30C or even more. Wednesday looks particuarly interesting this week, and then the BOM has the warm airmass really cranking into next week. Polar jet not getting a look in and not that much of a subtropical jet until next week.

Struggling to edit that post, but I see that the 19th and 21st were also below 25C here.

Man we are a dodging it big time here in Tauranga, not that far offshore to our NE is fair dumping! Luckily for us the moisture was lost coming across the Coromandels as it came down, so we have been spared. If the direction was a lil North we'd be in big trouble right now. Take a gander at the Rain Radar if you haven't been watching. I'm finally happy I can leave for work, but will be leaving the sand bags in place over the downstairs doors.
