Pretty dull weather in Melbourne this month, and we have some more rainy days coming up. there was no random super warm morning in September this year..

I've moved to the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne and am looking forward to this area that always seemed to get more storms on the radar!

According to weatherzone:
DAILY MAXIMUM TEMP

AVERAGE THIS MONTH: 16.4°C

AVERAGE ON RECORD: 17.3°C

DAILY MINIMUM TEMP

AVERAGE THIS MONTH: 8.8°C

AVERAGE ON RECORD: 8.1°C

RAINFALL

TOTAL THIS MONTH: 41.8mm (15 DAYS)

AVERAGE ON RECORD: 57.4mm (14.8 DAYS

My new rental is pretty cold, I'm using 2 blankets instead of 1 despite most nights dropping to 8-10 or so, but a lot of days recently haven't been so great. Either cloudy or cold but we also had some nice fine days.

10mm of rain today at the local Melbourne water site(Epping), it seems to be good compared to the rest of the city with this event.

Also I'm looking for a weather station. How do they generally output data? I want to have some fun in Microsoft Azure..

Wet season has started off with a banger up here with an unusual amount of storms.

Gove had 60.6mm in September (average is 6.66mm)

The last time Gove had such good Septembers were 1973 and 2010... massive wet season summers for the north of the continent followed then....

It appears that Sydney has now recorded its wettest year on record - with the thick end of three months to go.

Hopefully we will get the full details from BOM in due course.

Picked up 37mm locally in 2 hours or less. 0.2mm at 11pm and 25mm at midnight at my local Melbourne water site. Strangely 10km to the NE only got 8mm. Local creek was running fast this morning but was about 60cm lower in parts then what looked like the peak.

I have holes in the spouting in this rental and they were gushing last night!

The weather is awful here lately. 180mm in the last 30 days here at the local Melbourne water site. Ground is saturated and puddles develop easily on my lawn. Had a few decent overnight falls. Now it's gone from humid showery days to cold showery days for the next week or so. Way colder then Christchurch for the next week!

The irony of the Australia v England cricket match at the MCG being rained off today is not wasted on us Brits. This 'no result' has made it more difficult for both teams to progress to the final stages.

Looking at the Melbourne Airport observations, there was gentle rain through most of Friday with an afternoon temperature of just 12°C. Should have played the game over here as London had sunny intervals and an afternoon temperature of 19°C today.

Melbourne looks cold next week as well but Melbourne can be sunny and 30C+ from now. Melbourne Cup day looks terrible. With Melbourne v Sydney I much prefer Sydney because of climate.

It is certainly cold in Melbourne for the time of the year - second coldest day evidently for the running of the Melbourne Cup with a high of just 13°C on Tuesday 1st November. Normal average max for the beginning of November would be around 21-22°C.

Thankfully the rain stayed away at the Gabba in Brisbane to help England stay in the T20 World Cup for the time being.

It was 7.3 and raining at the nearest station to me(viewbank) when I checked the temperature at 11 30am yesterday. A Max of 14 today and overnight low of 5, although it could of been colder in the outer north.

This year hasn't had many warm days so far. Sometimes you get an early 30+ in October and at least a few days hitting 25 by now. I think a 30+ day can happen quite late some years.

I'm looking forward to the temperature warming up so some seeds sprout and my chillis and passionfruit grow.

I'm off to Thailand and Malaysia in a few weeks which will be a shock to the system. Hopefully I encounter some night time tropical storms

The forecast for the T20 final on Sunday at the MCG is not good with plenty of showers and a maximum of 26°C. It is not a lot better for the reserve day on Monday, with further showers and a max of just 19°C. BOM is going for 8-20mm on Sunday and 5-10mm on Monday.

Ironically, the forecast for Tuesday + Wednesday is much better, but the ICC is likely to be stubborn and would prefer to declare a draw if the requisite number of overs cannot be bowled rather than extending beyond Monday. It would be a shame if such a great contest was ended by DLS or without a ball being bowled.

Thankfully the Melbourne weather was kind to the cricket on Sunday so matters could be settled on the pitch.

I think the game was played between roughly 7pm to 10pm local time when it was mostly dry - only a few light rain showers - and the temperature only fell from 21°C to 20°C. It was quite humid (70-80%) and this combined with some dampness on the pitch made it a bowlers wicket. The game was broadcast live on terrestrial TV so I was able to watch it - started 8am our time.

The MCG is an imposing venue for cricket. It makes Lord's look rather small!!

Melbourne weather is still broken. Looks like there has been more cool days then warm. Returning from south east Asia to winter like weather. When I first moved to Melbourne 2010 they broke the record for maximums over 20 in a row. When I flew back to NZ around the 18th of December in 2019 it was a 44 degree day. I can't wait to move up to Queensland in a few years

Great year to start growing veges and herbs >_<

The temperature fell to -7.0°C at Perisher Valley (in the Snowy Mountains of NSW) on the morning of the 9th December 2022. According to this tweet, this equals the lowest ever temperature recorded in Australia in both December and for the summer - by this, I assume he means Dec, Jan + Feb.

^ A quick search shows that the BoM's Thredbo Top Station (1957m asl) in the Snowy Mountains recorded -9.0°C on 13 Dec 1976... :-k

Thanks Nev - I took a quick look at the BOM site and their climate records and found the Thredbo Top Station figure. This is effectively a mountain top site, so I am assuming it is not accepted as suitable to hold record values?

For December, these other sites have the following records:

Charlotte Pass (record 1930-2015) -7.0°C on 20/12/1999
Perisher Valley (record from 1976) -6.0°C on 11/12/2020
Thredbo Village (record since 1969) -6.2°C on 24/12/1995

The Thredbo Top Station site (1957m asl) might simply mean that it's a lot higher than the Thredbo Village site (1380m asl), as I think Thredbo is named after a river valley. So maybe Weatherzone, where that story originated from, just hastily overlooked the Thredbo Top Station record..?

'Australia's lowest summer temp on record' - Weatherzone

I see Weatherzone is also touting the -5.4°C recorded this morning at the BoM's current Mt Hotham site (1849m asl) as Victoria's lowest summer temp on record. Yet the BoM has -6.3°C recorded at its older nearby Mt Hotham site (1750m asl) on 19 Dec 1984. Go figure... :-k

Weather has been getting nicer in Melbourne. 8-11 minimums and mid - late 20s maximum. Its nice when those warm days don't come with stupidly warm nights.

I use the viewbank site as I'm in the outer north and it seems like the best one to use even thought its closer to the city. Lower minimum and higher maximum them the city. Still some cool nights coming up with warm days

This one hit me and the local Melbourne site wasnt reporting at the time but checking today it looked like we got 15mm from it. It was kind of windy too and I was worried about hail but it was small. Best looking storm in a while. Video I took is too large for this site

I had another storm in the evening but it seemed to weaken and break up when overhead. Was inside and had some lightning pretty close by.

Looks like the chance of severe storms again today.

On Wednesday this week (18th Jan), the station at Sydney Observatory recorded its first 30°C maximum in 11 months setting the second longest sub 30°C maximum streak (of 331 days) in its long history.

While it might be true that you have yet to record ≥30.0C since early Feb last year, the last 10 summers for most of Canterbury (including its 2nd warmest summer on record in 2017-18) have on average been warmer than its previous 10 summers.

Last year was also Sydney's wettest year on record with 2530mm, smashing its previous record set in 1950 by 336mm.

A max of 18 in Melbourne today. It dropped to 11 degrees at 5pm yesterday at the Viewbank site and stayed at that for more then 12 hours. I needed a blanket last night and woke up needing another due to cold house and not being used to this 11 degree stuff.

My workmate in Brisbane said its been hot there and humid. I checked before and saw a 25 degree dewpoint in Brisbane and 27.7 in Bundaberg.
