I see Sydney airport recorded 64mm in one hour yesterday afternoon!

Very hot in WA in the last few days of December. The mercury reached 49.5°C at Roebourne Airport on the 31st. This is the third equal highest temperature recorded in Australia in December - the highest is 49.9°C at Nullarbor (South Australia) on 19/12/2019.

Looks like my local melbourne water rainfall station at epping got 34mm from storms yesterday. Not sure when but at 4pm there was 15mm, 26mm at 5pm and 31mm at 6pm. The local creek shot up from 1m to 2m in less than an hour or less(maybe it was even 30-40 mins), I can't remember what it was when I looked. It was still running way higher then usual this morning, but not as bad as October last year after a few days of heavy rainfall and like 180mm in a month.

Luckily my flight from Christchurch to Melbourne arrived at 6pm yesterday so no delays or anything. I saw some flashes of lightning out the window.Seems like they got the baggage workers off the runway earlier.

30 degree max with 20 degree dewpoints today. I wish we had an official weather station further north, especially with the urban sprawl. Viewbank has different topography and on some days I've seen it cloudy closer to the city but sunny here.

Reports of 50-70mm in some places on theaustralianweatherforum.


Edit: at 8pm I'm hearing thunder but the lightning seems to be at least 20 km away on the weatherzone radar or not being picked up at all

28mm overnight, up to 38mm since 9am yesterday in Epping. Some sites around the city got more. Between 12:30am and 1:30am we got 17mm. In one 6 min period it was 3.6mm.

Darebin creek is up to 2m again at the melb water Epping gauge. It looks like the path was covered by water overnight. Way higher and wider then usual further upstream from it.

Currently sitting at 33.9 at the viewbank site with a 20.9 dewpoint and feels like 37.7 and no wind.

It was 34.3 earlier with a 22.4 dewpoint and feels like 37.8, I guess there was slightly more wind.

40mm in 15 minutes at a site in the south east overnight. I saw some flickers of lightning out the window and heard distant thunder but only got 1.2mm in epping

Birdsville's 49.4C yesterday was Oueensland's 2nd highest all-time record, just shy of its own Queensland record of 49.5C set on December 24, 1972. Birdsville also set a new Queensland all-time high minimum temp record of 35.2C on Tuesday (previous record was 35.1C at Ballera Gas Field on January 26, 2019).

South Australia's Moomba Airport recorded 48.1C yesterday.

Birdsville recorded a minimum temp of 36.4C yesterday morning. The highest minimum temp ever recorded in Australia (and possibly the Southern Hemisphere) is 36.6C at Borrona Downs, Wanaaring in New South Wales on January 26, 2019.

The BOM for Queensland reported that a sounding on Monday morning showed 73.5mm of precipitable water which is apparently a record for Brisbane Airport.

One of my old workmates who was based in Brisbane sent me a screenshot of 35 degrees with 27 degree dewpoints the other week.

Closest site to me in Melbourne got to 35.6 yesterday and had a low of 9.6. 13.4 this morning and a high of 38.4. No crazy overnight temperatures this year.

Also melbourne was one of the few places below average this January despite Australia having its 3rd warmest January on record. I think this summer has had the least 30/35+ days so far since I've been here. I think melbourne city itself has only had 2 days over 35.

I remember doing a 44 or 45 degree day in December in 2019 when I flew to NZ

South east Melbourne and south west got smashed yesterday.. it got pretty windy here in Epping with brief rain but I've seen worse. I went for a pushbike ride this morning and saw a big branch down on a gum tree a few km away.

I wonder how strong those gusts were that took down the transmission lines

Very hot again in Western Australia on Sunday 18th February 2024 and very close to breaking the 50°C mark. These are the maximums I can find on the BOM site:

49.9°C at Carnarvon
49.8°C at Shark Bay Airport
49.3°C at Geraldton Airport

The high at Perth Airport was 43.2°C.

If there were more official stations in WA inland from Carnarvon and shark bay I'm sure one of them would of cracked 50.

If you look at Shark Bay Airport it's on a peninsula.

Pretty dry out Epping way, we've had 1.6mm since January 27th. The Darebin creek has dried out in spots and rocks in the creek are two different colours as part of them have been underwater for so long I assume.

3 days hitting 38 this long weekend - at the viewbank station anyway. It didn't really drop below 28 degrees overnight on Saturday. Melbourne would of broken its March minimum record if it wasn't for 20 degrees at 9am on Saturday.

Awful weather. I needed a blanket once or twice first thing in the morning last week. I can't wait to return to these 10-12 degrees minimums

It was quite the fright on Saturday, Pilot warned us it was 28°C in Melbourne when leaving Auckland, he hoped it would drop a few degrees before we landed there, just before descent he warned us it had gone up to 29C. Made my walk from the station to the hotel rather uncomfortable.

I just spent 3 days in Sydney 5-7th March and then 4 days in Noosa heads 7th to 10th. Sydney was lovely with most days around 31c. Noosa the humdity was a shock. Its a strange feeling from a Christchurch local when every day only moves a few degrees from 23-24c overnight temps to 28-29c highs. Humdity was around 60-70% most days. Only encountered a few mm of rain in Noosa, the rest of the trip was dry.

That would of been a shock. At least it didn't come with tropical dewpoints like in December. I couldn't imagine flying in during that 2014 heatwave to 36 degrees at 9am
It has been above 30 since last Friday at the viewbank station . Today got to 29.9. Like I've complained about before Melbourne is so big they need an outer north station.

Storms / showers forecasted today but they were north/ north east of the metropolitan area. All that green from rain in December / Jan lasted a while but now most grass looks like hay.

The only pro to this is I can't remember the last time I mowed the lawn

I've attached a graph of weekly rainfall since the first of December in Epping.

I'd imagine some suburbs got a bit more rain during some weeks before the dry due to being hit by more storms

Here is the last 2 months of rainfall in Epping.

That site is pretty close to me and I'm surprised we got 53mm, mostly since 4 30pm yesterday. Looking at some of the 6 min periods it sounded heavier during some periods overnight.

I saw 75mm in one site out east.
