According to this article on Weatherzone, Melbourne recorded tis driest ever March in 2024 with just 2.8mm of rain recorded at the Olympic Park site. It states that the city records go back 170 years.

As mentioned by ryant1234 above, the 1st of April was a wet day in Melbourne with 53.2mm recorded at the same site in the 24 hours to 9am on the 2nd. Melbourne Airport recorded 53.0mm in the same period.

Ah yes, good old Warragamba. The debate continues as to whether they should raise the wall or not. My dad has had 300mm (150mm of that in two hours this morning). He’s near the Illawarra escarpment.

As mentioned above, it was very wet in the Sydney area on Friday/Saturday (5th/6th April) and below are the rainfall totals for the 24 hours to 9am on Saturday 6th - taken from the BOM website and for sites closest to the CBD:

160.6mm at Canterbury
145.0mm at Sydney Airport
128.2mm at Lucas Heights
124.4mm at Bankstown
112.2mm at Holsworthy
103.0mm at Parramatta
82.2mm at Olympic Park, Sydney

The Observatory Hill site stopped reporting rainfall on Friday evening.

Not much interesting going on in Melbourne.

Viewbank site is colder than normal and got to -1.9 which is its record for June. But I think the site haa only been around for 20 years. Would of been a degree or 2 colder around plenty gorge.

Seems like more frosts this year too. Light frost again today.

As usual I question if Epping has colder minimums on average than closer to the city but on the plus side avoids the cloudy days closer to the CBD.

-2.1 at viewbank site this morning. 100% humidity. Does NZ have a drier cold? I can't remember.

Still 1.9 at the moment. Patches of frost still in the garden out in Epping. Unfortunately no puddles anywhere to step on like back in Christchurch after a frost.

I wish I got motivated to pushbike out a bit further this morning, near plenty gorge would of been insanely cold!

The figures for Liawenee are interesting as it is a noted very cold spot in the interior of Tasmania at around 3000ft elevation. The attached chart (from the BOM site) has the coldest July temperatures on record for Tasmania and those on lower ground are an order of magnitude colder than the temperatures of the last couple of days. It has not yet been updated to include the 3rd July 2024 figure for Liawenee.

Note, the next lowest value at all the other Tasmania sites for this current July is -6.4°C at Fingal (Fleming Street) on 2nd July 2024.

That Liawenee station has only been open for 20 years. Someone on aus weather forum said it would of been interesting to see how cold it was in during a period in 1983.

-1.5 in viewbank atm. Wouldn't be surprised if dropped further. Difficult to get out of bed in a house with slanted glass panels in the toilet.. letting cold air in.

The following night (3rd/4th July) was even colder at Liawenee with a low of -13.5°C. These are the minimums for the first 5 days of July from the station summary on the BOM site (9am to 9am):

1st -5.8°C
2nd -10.8°C
3rd -12.9°C
4th -13.5°C
5th -12.6°C

The lowest so far overnight 5th to 6th (up to 2am on the 6th) is -6.6°C.

Liawenee being at 1,065 metres above sea level you can understand why so extremely cold

Liawenee is at a high altitude, but it is not a mountain top - it sits on the central plateau of the island and is surrounded by peaks up to roughly 2000ft higher. The site is quoted by the BOM in its monthly extremes for Tasmania, but it is probably not really representative of where people live on the island - the population of the 'town' of Liawenee is quoted variously as one or two!

The low overnight 5th/6th July was mild at -9.7°C. The next lowest I can find for this night was -6.4°C at Ross which is a small town in the eastern middle of the island on the main road between Hobart + Launceston.

Great article here by the ABC with many pictures of the frost and ice around Liawenee. The lakes in the area, which are popular fishing sites, have frozen over with the ice stated to be an inch thick.

At 10pm melbourne and Sydney were 13.5, Perth was 12.4, Brisbane was 12, Adelaide was 15.2 and Hobart was 12.6 degrees

I wonder how often Melbourne and Hobart are warmer than Brisbane in the middle of Winter at 10pm.

There have been some chilly nights recently in Queensland with a long running station in the far north setting a new July record low temperature.

The BOM site at Palmerville (in the Shire of Cook, North Queensland) has been operating since 1889 and recorded a low of just 0.5°C on the morning of 18th July 2024. This beat the old July record of 1.7°C set way back on 4/7/1899. The station record low is -0.1°C set on 12/6/1913.

Interestingly, the maximum the previous day (17th July 2024) was 29.1°C - that is a big fall, but the air was very dry - 22% humidity at 3pm on the 17th.

Still 5.5 at 11 50am due to low cloud/ fog

I hung out heaps of washing with the expectation it would clear earlier. Looking at the satellite, the melbourne metropolitan area is the only place in Victoria with cloud/fog.

Slowly clearing from the west. Hopefully that washing dries!

6.1 at 1pm..I see blue sky! I went for a bike ride on my lunch and regretted not wearing gloves.

Returned to nice weather in Melbourne. But feels cold compared to east / west Malaysi. I did almost feel chilly when it rained in a town 1200m above sea level. Got to experience the loudest crack of thunder while eating in one of those open food courts in Kuala Lumpur.

Anyway Melbourne's temperature is running closer to September's average so far this month. Looks like 2 22 degree days coming up and a lot of nice days.

If conditions were right it could be a lot warmer.

According to this tweet, South Australia saw a new 'winter temperature' (Jun-Aug) record on Friday 23rd August 2024 with 38.5°C recorded at Oodnadatta. I believe the old record was 36.5°C at the same site set way back on 12th august 1946.

Melbourne for Sunday. Partly cloudy. Very high chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon and evening. The chance of a thunderstorm from the late morning, possibly severe with destructive winds, large hail and possible heavy falls in the NE suburbs. Winds N 20 to 30 km/h increasing to 30 to 45 km/h in the morning then turning W/NW 25 to 35 km/h in the evening

I've seen damaging winds before. If I've seen destructive winds as a possibility forecasted it was a long time ago.

Yes, quite a remarkably warm air mass for this time of year. All 10 of South Australia's highest temps recorded in the last 2 days have completely smashed their previous winter and August records.

Australia recorded its highest ever winter and August temp of 41.6°C today at Yampi Sound in WA's Kimberley region (previous record was 41.2°C at West Roebuck, WA in 2020). Australia has also recorded temps of 40°C or more 8 times in the last couple of days. Before that it had only ever recorded 40°C or more 4 times in winter (incl. 3 in 2020).

Heavy rain and some lightning in Epping yesterday afternoon from a storm.

Had a second one go through Melbourne around 6 30pm last night. I just got some rain around that time and no lightning. The places that got hit had strong wind, heavy rain and continuous lightning judging by some videos.

The site used for Melbourne's temperatures hasn't gone below 10.8 since last Wednesday.
If we go back to the the 14th the only minimums below 10.3 were 6.2 and 7.8.
At that site the maximum is l 3.1 above average and minimum +2.

Viewbank site is +2.9 max and +0.4 minimum

Even in September getting a run of weather this warm is rare.
