Tuesday was Australia's hottest day on record. Yesterday may have beaten that.

"Premier Gladys Berejiklian has declared a state of emergency across New South Wales for the next 7 days, as firefighters brace for heatwave conditions."

The race to 50C is on.

Nullarbor, SA just reached an all time record for it's site of 49.2°C
http://www.bom.gov.au/sa/observations/saall.shtml

Also a state-wide record for December.

Yes! But should be of note that's Western Standard Time and as Eucla sits so far away from Perth, they have their own unofficial time-zone which they use (45 mins ahead of Perth and 45 minutes behind SA (during standard time)).

14 degrees minimum overnight in Melbourne tonight and up to 44 tomorrow. A nice day for an early morning flight to Christchurch! Lots of December records are being broken by a degree or two 12 days from the end of the month.

Yep 49.9 in S.A looks like the peak. It seems the elusive 50c remains for now, another chance tomorrow. I'm reading the main peaks up to 6pm AEST by state / terr are

S.A – 49.9c (Nullarbor)
W.A 49.8c
QLD – 47.2c
NSW – 47.1c
N.T 45.8c
Vic – 45.5c

Interesting tomorrow as 'total totals' across S.A and Vic are above 50 near the frontal boundary....so dry lightning would be a big concern for fire authorities.

It did indeed. Australia's average T-max of 41.9C on Wednesday beat Tuesday's record by a by a full 1.0C
(and the previous record in Jan 2013 by 1.6C).

47.4c clocked east of Adelaide at Pallamana near midday local time. Still a clear sky over that area, storms to the west. Renmark to Mildura is going to be the area to watch this afternoon IMO.
