Pretty interesting watching the radar last night in Melbourne, you could see bands of rain coming from the east, north, and north west.

Urgh, had a storm break up right before it hit my suburb.. saw the dark red turn into light green. Seems to be a few isolated heavy storms

Keep an eye out on South Eastern QLD and North East NSW Tommorow in particular as a rather large scale severe thunderstorm outbreak is expected from Thursday afternoon.
Large hail and damaging straight line winds are the main risk factors.
Wouldn't rule out Tornadoes either on the more isolated cells.

Awesome sequence the last 24 hrs with an approaching deep low to South Australia.

A tornado has impacted Armidale, NSW during the night. Damage to many buildings and I’ve seen a few photos of cars that have been overturned.

woa, and another Tornado...Aus is not known for its tornados normally?

Lightning activity very much so in the Tasman Sea today.

I think people are just noticing them more as the population grows and more people move to rural areas. Almost everyone having a video camera on them helps too
There was an estimated f4 inland from Bundaberg in the early 1990s. I think they strike the cities every now and then, Brisbane had an f3 in the 70s and Melbourne had one in the 1920s.

Pretty slow moving storms with heavy rainfall but not much lightning last night in the northern and typically drier western suburbs of Melbourne and Geelong and the surrounding area. I was waiting for an hour and a half for one to arrive, only to recieve average rain as it broke up.. I swear since I've been working from home we have had less storms then Christchurch gets a year.

One place that gets around 420mm in a year got 30mm in 20 mins if I recall correctly. It's meant to rain a lot tonight and eventually become quite windy

Looks like a tornado near Gladstone. Ah I can't wait till I move rural.. I've done my research going through long term BOM rainfall data and finding the places with the most reliable rainfall on the east coast / Tasmania (east facing coastline is the best once you get north of Bundaberg or so..)

Some huge hail in Queensland yesterday. Today is looking even more volatile.

Unusual cold upper air over eastern Australia over recent days with the usual very moist low level air along the coast.

Seems like another tornado near Bundaberg earlier in the week, around the same area they had a suspected f4 in the early 90s. A weatherzone article quoted a macadamia farmer having 145mm in 45 mins.

Had some storms come through around the Melbourne area last night. Geelong got hit 4 or 5 times. I had 2 storms come through in the inner west, best in ages but not too impressive compared to other parts of town. Had a CG land nearby with less then half a second till I heard the thunder.

It's the windiest event outside of a storm we've had in ages on this side of town this morning. Small waves on the river, Trees down, traffic lights out on every block surrounding me expect 1, power out for lots of people but luckily I'm fine.

Back to winter in Tasmania. Unusually late snow to 200m at a similar latitude to Chch.

Huge storm in QLD tonight, looked Ike ( classic supercell) structure if am correct. Usually you would see LP structure but the conditions over in aus this season have been one above!

Was that a "Downburst" in Sydney yesterday?

Australia evidently recorded its hottest day of 2021 today (20th Dec) with 47.9°C (118.2°F) reported at Mardie - in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. Three other nearby sites reached a rounded up 47°C.

Perth had its hottest Christmas Day on record with a value of 42.8°C at the official city Metro site. At the airport it reached 43.1°C. I think this is the hottest Christmas Day at any of the seven major Australian city sites.

According to another tweet from the BOM, Darwin experienced it coolest Christmas Day on record - the maximum was only 27.3°C. Unfortunately, they do not say what the previous record was. They also had 50mm of rain on the day as a tropical depression passed close to the city.
