Had a very hot Friday and Saturday here. Went into the office Friday and walking home from the station at 7pm was very uncomfortable.

More consecutive warm days coming up. More typical of jan/feb

This report on the Weatherzone site claims that Sydney Airport was the hottest place on the planet at 12:15 local time on Wednesday 27th November 2024 when it recorded 38.2°C. A brief check of Aussie temperatures suggest it might be true for that continent, but I do not have the resources to confirm if this was the case worldwide.

Hottest city yes maybe, but areas of Paraguay have been around 40 deg, and that is without the urban heat island effect.

The claim is that Sydney was the hottest place in world at that particular point in time i.e., 12:15pm in Sydney equates to 10:15pm in Paraguay.
Makes for a great headline though...

You're probably looking at the 32.9C recorded at the central city's Observatory Hill site, compared to the (poorly sited) airport's 38.2C.

However, there were several more inland sites in the greater Sydney area, and indeed the rest of Australia, that went on to record higher temps that day, the highest being 39.9C at both Penrith in Sydney's outer western suburbs and Fitzroy Crossing Aero in WA.

Unfortunately some videos I took of a storm 50km to the north on Tuesday evening are too big to upload.
It was putting out lightning every 2 to 3 seconds for a while but when it hit here that had reduced to once a minute.

The summer night time storms are usually isolated and not on cloudy evenings so the visibility is great. Some people could see that storm from 80km+ away.

20-22 dewpoints at some stages this week. The humidity right now feels way more uncomfortable than a normal 30 degree day.

Some places got hit by storms 5 times in a day on Wednesday. I got hit once, and had one just miss.

Missed a storm at home on Tuesday, due to being in the office, and missed all those storms in the CBD due to being at home Wednesday :x

That article was so pointless. It was still 9 15am in WA

Feeling like Queensland a lot in the morning lately.

Viewbank maximum of 31.1 yesterday and 32.5 today. Southerly came through and dropped the temperature. Now it's 18.

A few more warm days coming up.. Hard to believe it's only early December. Usually I have a moan about going home to Christchurch weather around Christmas but I feel like it will be a relief this year 😂

From what I recall November maximums were 2-3 above normal at viewbank. Was also half a degree off equaling the lowest recorded minimum as well. It's only 20 year old site though.

Some people commenting on the Australian Weather forum about South West Victoria and around the Otways being in a big rainfall deficient due to weather systems that usually give them their rain, not occurring as frequently

Weather has chilled out a bit with a big peak coming up.

I'd much rather weeks of consistent low 30s than this.
Oddly needed a blanket early morning on a 16 degree minimum the other day, maybe it was a few degrees cooler in Epping compared to the Viewbank site.

Plenty of moisture for thunderstorms last week. I saw a dew point in Sydney of 26C last week but 24C dp was the general number for that day.

I prefer your overnight lows. It's been a tad warm overnight of late at times.

The average overnight lows here aren't so bad. But we can get some really warm nights.

Hot one tomorrow. 43 here and 41 in the Melbourne CBD at least the heat doesn't last long.
The heat is worse further inland and is lasting longer

Cloudy most of the day. Didn't hit the expected temperature which is nothing to complain about.

Some humid 10 minute figures today at viewbank

38.5/16.7 dewpoint
37.3/18.8

According to the BOM site, the temperature reached 47.2°C at 3:53pm today, Boxing Day, at Birdsville in Queensland. I think the record for this site for both December and all-time is 49.5°C.

Yes, Birdsville's 49.5°C on Xmas Eve in 1972 is also Queensland's highest all-time temp. It also holds the State's 2nd and 3rd highest ever temp record of 49.4°C set last January, and 49.3°C also on Xmas Eve in 2019.

Back to Melbourne weather.

That 10 days in Christchurch was probably the worst Xmas/ new years weather I can remember heading back to since I moved over here.

12 degrees most of the day and raining yesterday in Christchurch.

And 39 today and 40 tomorrow at the viewbank site in melbourne.

Fortunately no super hot night so far this summer.

I remember when I moved to Melbourne in 2010 there were some nights that had minimums around 28 to 30 and the house I was staying in and room i was sharing didn't have a fan
