I cringe at the media headlines, It is not a tropical cyclone, it barely made it to TC status in the tropics 2 days ago. It is much deeper with stronger winds as a mid latitude low than it was as tropical cyclone. I guess that means we were spared the term "weather bomb" or maybe "super weather bomb"

Hawkes Bay had nothing all day, few spits of rain in last hour, some moderate wind from the north - could do with a drenching - maybe tonight.

Back onto rain here. Could be a good fall overnight.
Winds have eased, not as strong as I expected.

Ex-tropical storm & heavy rain, Jan 31st to Feb 3
I have had to change my underwear. Was watching the computer and weather consol in the dark with the rain falling consistently over 100mm/hr and then a super close cg struck sending a big power surge through the house. Near instant thunder. This line has much heavier rain than the radar suggests. I reached 3mm/min at one point. It’s over now, with 17mm in as many minutes maybe more like 15 mins.

The line is well through here now but I have noticed a couple of distant flashes out to the east.

The road to Hokitika from to Roass is fine I drove it twice yesterday. There were a few small trees over the road nothing blocking it. No erosion etc. South of Ross at Fergusons bush is where the majority of trees over the road are and further south Franz/Fox is where the big landslips are. Bruce bay where the road nears the coastline is very buggered like Punakaiki it will take weeks to fix it.Razor wrote: ↑Thu 01/02/2018 21:56 wow some astounding picures emerging of the road around Punakaiki Coast, gobsmacking damage. Thanks joecam!
36mm of good drenching rain for us since around midnight, might squeeze a few more out yet. Quite a bit more than I expected for here out of this one to be honest

Interesting to see the severe weather watch for heavy rain and gales tomorrow. GFS doesn't show much, but EC shows a compact tiny low pressure core moving northwards. Must be unusual to see such a compact system here.

Yeah the ukmo model on the MS website suggests a tiny low is going to make it's way north and attack auckland

Midnight run of the gfs looked fairly aggresive for precip chances tomorrow/Sunday for upper NI.
Instability/strengthening onshore E flow north of Auckland, fairly robust upper level trough (remnants of Fehi).

Re: Ex-tropical storm & heavy rain, Jan 31st to Feb 3
Most recent EC run has it staying offshore of the west coast of Northland now. Just a small change in trajectory will make all the difference rain-wise.
