Got 30 mm here from around midnight also was very heavy early thismorning for about an hour. A mix of torrential drizzle and big drops also. We don't often get that in Canterbury what causes that? High humidity levels? Probably standard for you guys up north.

This ex cyclone is still hanging on. The radar looks awesome. It’s like a pin sized tropical cyclone.

That vortex looks interesting on radar. We end up with instability today and tomorrow. Upper air will be relatively cold with 500mb cooling off to -17C and surface dps 16C.
Maybe some nightime lightning over Hauraki Gulf/North Auckland overnight tonight given warm sea temps as well.

Just add that it would be more favourable if the rain out to the west stayed out at sea. We want the sun out today for some locally grown convection.

Feeling chilly given how warm it's been recently. Only 18C currently!

Doesn't seem as deep as EC showed it to be? Looks like it's crossing the Auckland area now and pressure is still 1004hPa, not in the 990s...

Likely two different cloud types precipitating. Drizzle comes from thick stratus. Bigger drops from nimostratus which typically has a higher base.Nathanaelcraven wrote: ↑Fri 02/02/2018 21:36 A mix of torrential drizzle and big drops also. We don't often get that in Canterbury what causes that?

Here in Swanson, there is a couple of mature anvils off to the north, and a great looking lump of cloud to the south where the low is. Some good heating going on at the moment.
Edit - really weird now, you can see clouds converging from the north and east into it.Wind has picked up here, dark to the south

It has been a quite sunny afternoon north of the Manakau harbour but cloudy with some rain to the south.

The wind is really picking up here, 63kph gust. Hope the neighbour's trampoline is secure if it keeps on increasing!
Edit - 74kph gust, close lightning

I've had 29.6mm in the last hour, wouldn't be surprised if there was local flooding around the west Auckland area.

I went for a drive out to Waitakere. Apart from a few flashes I didn't see much as the storm was a rainy mess. Torrential rain encountered. Lots of static on the am band, it would have been mostly IC.

Sounds similar to the thunderstorms we have had down here from off the 4 Peaks/Mt. Peel area.

Re: Ex-tropical storm & heavy rain, Jan 31st to Feb 3
Sads news. There is a PWS in the area which collected 40mm in an hour (Mountain Road). The ground was wet from the Thursdays rain so todays thunderstorm would have produced excessive run off.
Radar showed the storm was most intense near Piha, would be interesting if there was a rain measurement from that area.
