Re: General February Weather
Back from Stewart Island today where I did find the weather there quite warm as to what I expected.
Some pictures later. Expecting much cooler weather, took more clothes than expected but ended up spent most of the time tramping in T-shirt and shorts.

Fantastic thunderstorms on the west coast at the moment ( coastal Kumara). Lighting every 10 seconds or less

Re: General February Weather
Metservice going all out on the west coast with a high risk of severe storms, then extended a moderate risk over to Chch. Had wondered as the frontal activity looked quite lively today from the models.

Well, a whole load of no thunder or even rain but a belter of a day to compensate! Still 23 and clear blue sky, may head along to Sparks later.

4 of the last 5 days over 30 degrees here, and proabably another one tomorrow I'd say. What a summer!

Re: General February Weather
There were some ominous looking cloud to the south of Timaru whilst driving to Temuka today, glancing through the lower southerly stratus moving through.
I see later , the Blitz did record some strikes well out to the east in the Canterbury Bight.
Heard no sferics here.

Re: General February Weather
Just a note that TSI (total solar irradiance) is in the middle of one of its significant drops. In the past I have noted that these tend to make cool airflows over NZ noticeably colder than the models predict, and we have a cool south to southwest period coming up next week. It will be interesting to see how the temperatures respond. We may well also see significant cold in other parts of the world. The TSI drop since October is about 0.5Wm2, or about 0.04% as we move closer to solar minimum. Doesn't sound like much, but we shall see.

Re: General February Weather
Nice day here with not much wind but as you said, there, Tony, colder weather ahead for here
Stewart Island was lovely, some sheltered part out of the westerly was quite warm, nearly semi tropical with the golden sandy beaches.

Re: General February Weather
Very humid conditions, the overnight dewpoint temperature was 20C. I'm sure plenty of people will be finding it hard to sleep in this weather. Air conditioning needed.

Looks a decent cold pool over the South Island tomorrow. Probably a waterspout or two on the South Island West Coast.

8.8mm over the last 24 hours, gets me up to 191mm for the month. A Feb 200mm is still a chance here.

Loving the dewpoints around 15C, feels so refreshing after the conditions we've had recently!

Re: General February Weather
Could not agree more! Sunday night was so uncomfortable, so much easier to put a jumper on that to try cool down. Bring on the cooler months!
