Interesting how it got to 31C in Hawkes Bay, yet down here the temperature has been sitting around the 11C mark all day and now we have the fire going, plus I noticed one or 2 of the neighbours have lit their fires judging from light wood-smoke from their chimneys
Rain here has been continuous since yesterday but the winds have been light from between the NE and SE, well so far.

Some serious surface flooding in Rangiora, news hub out filming it all. Rain heavier now than any point.

Certainly getting heavier all the time here in town now. Past a slip on Cashmere Rd on way home, lots of surface flooding. High tide after9pm a real worry

Good Luck chaps, feel guilty in HB with 31 degrees, bit blustery now but no rain, 998 and 50kmph gusts, could so easily have been us getting snotted, usually is this coast.

Sticky (and stinky) hot here in Castlecliff Wanganui. Every 5-15 minutes we get bursts of wind which last for around the same amount of time before dying out to almost dead calm. Can't leave windows or doors on the north/west side open because when the wind comes they'll just about get ripped open/off.
Big black ominouos clouds skirting all the way around us, but the sun is mostly out overhead and no rain since last night. Temp would eaisly be 28-29 degrees.
To all in the beloved mainland, stay safe!

And there would be more blue too if the radar was capable to penetrating this low cloud cover further afield.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 20/02/2018 18:35 66mm so far here in Geraldine.

Northerly finally turned up at Wellington. 20-35kts with forecast for airport suggesting gusting 55kts in the near future.

Re: Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gita impacts NZ Feb 18th-21st
Right on cue.
Chris Brandolino mentioned NIWA's modelling for Wellington in an interview on RNZ National this afternoon. He said that the calm would continue through the evening commute period but wind would rapidly rise by 7:30 pm.
At Tawa the calm that had persisted since yesterday abruptly ended at 6:40 p.m. By 7 o'clock we had northerly gusts with horizontal rain. The fog which had lifted mid-afternoon is now back - there's a lot of "clagg" out there now.
A nice bit of last-minute forecasting there, NIWA.
At Tawa now 50 mm for day, gusty northerly, low cloud, fog.
I just hope we won't be in for what has been battering Taranaki, Nelson and Westland ahead of us.

Re: Re: Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gita impacts NZ Feb 18th-21st
still 27 degrees in Palmy at 7:30pm, that must be uncomfortable. Certainly plenty of cold air feeding it from down here, max temp of 12 degrees for us. Still no wind....43mm of rain and countaing rapidly

Re: Re: Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gita impacts NZ Feb 18th-21st
One other thing worth commenting on, with every model run over the last 48 hours the predicted freezing level in Otago and South Canty has dropped. When the dust settles in the next few days, I expect we will see pictures of snow on the southern ranges to reasonably low levels (for the time of year). This would be the coldest air to arrive over NZ since probably late October.

Philip Duncan calling a category 1 when it makes landfall, very poor form of him but then again no surprise there.

Extremely strong gusts now in Hector. My Landcruiser is parked into wind and have to wait between gusts to open door. Its impossible to open otherwise and also very dangerous. It could hurt ! No rain.
