NIWA weather station at Oban, Stewart Island or Rakiura

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Here is NIWAr's weather station at Oban.
It's a shame that MS haven't got a recording station there as well as the one on the southern tip of the island as now I see they feature Oban on TV One's news weather report. I asked one or two of the locals if they had seen that but they hadn't, too busy to watch TV.
If you click onto MS Stewart Island on their website, it tells you nothing which is a bit useless.

I know one of the drums to the right is the rain gauge, what would be the other? :-k

The smaller drum is the manual gauge, the large one is a Dynes tilting syphon gauge, which records accumulated rainfall on a paper chart, thus enabling calculation of rainfall rates.

Nice photo. Bit surprised it's not that far from that asphalt road though.

Yes. I thought that too but the only maximum recorded there was 28.5C according to the NIWA notes.

That asphalt road looks to be on the south side so it would have less effect

Welington airport weather station is right next to an aspalt/concrete path. Looks a lot closer than that Oban one!
