re New Plymouth deluge.
Did Met Service issue a warning? There radar will have detected the event occuring which will have triggered the warning process.

Very pleasant day for Auckland with 24C. Localised heavy showers over South Auckland currently.

That's a fairly torrential isolated downpour all right! 8-o

NIWA don't have a 30 minute rainfall record, but Tauranga holds the 10 minute record of 34mm, and the hourly record is 134mm recorded at 'Cropp at Waterfall' inland and south of Hokitika (Cropp at Waterfall and nearby Prices Flat also hold every other NZ rainfall record).

There was a lot of lightning activity last night in the Tasman Sea.
Would that of contributed to the New Plymouth downpour?

Did MS issue a warning?
I think we all know the big weather events come without warning.... cue Esk Valley HB, New Plymouth, Waimarama 2011 770mm in 24hrs, Bola, Giselle, my experience is that the media and MS 'beat ups' never materialise... cue Hola as a recent example.

Nev, do have an easily accessible record with the where and when details? Would'n't surprise me if that was the May 2005 event, we got drowned at home.

Looks like central Otago had a very cold day with Wanaka sitting on 6-7C all day.

Fine today in Auckland with 24C. Showers tomorrow, thunder possible late in the day. Weak upper winds suggest lightning activity will be weak.

Webcam shows a dusting of snow not just on the Remarkables, but also on top of hill front of them (Kelvis Heights - about 800m high)

Let's hope that it rains for the next four days!! :> Otherwise it could all be over within two days if the Black Caps make a bold declaration.

Expecting a mix of sunshine and showers here next few days with the trough crossing, afternoon and evening most at risk for showers, clearing conditions Sunday. I live near Eden Park, 1 shower already here today.

I fear that's a forecast for Mr Root, not Mr Williamson

A 5 day test seems very unlikely after yesterday

That rain cell moving in to Auckland from the NE has the looks of a possible thunderstorm...
