Hello John. An update to the frost occurrence at your site in Geraldine gives 16 for August and 9 for September, and with two so far in October, and that gives a current total for 2018 of 68. That is quite an impressive annual total for what appears to have been a mild year.

Are you expecting any further frosts as you move through spring into early summer?

Will wait and see, there, Simon, especially after the clearance of the current weather system over us at the moment. Don't forget, the spot here in Raukapuka is frost prone compared to other places here in Geraldine. (I don't know if you know the town) The "Downs" which is the hilly area behind the town has very much less frosts than down here on the northern banks of the Waihi river.

Thanks for your reply, John. The topographic map does show Raukapuka in the Waihi river valley where cold air might be expected to pool. Does this also lead to more fog in your area compared to the Downs?

Yes it does. Can be foggy here and across the plains around here but I haven't noticed any
"pea-soupers'" since we have been here.
.....by the way, there was a frost here this morning. Down to minus 0.9C just before sunrise at 645am.

Grape vine has flower buds already. Sure it's a little ahead of normal. Never seen it adversely affected by a spring frost in 15 years so thinking it will be fine tonight. Image

Got down to 1.3C at 5:10am then temp started to rise after 5:30am. Funny as well before sunrise and no obvious cloud or breeze (was awake to see), guess there must have been puff of breeze just too slight to notice. Only sign of ice was a tiny patch on neighbour's roof. Was driving South early, some very select patches of ground frost from Kihikihi southwards (confined to roadside ditches and similar). Right now >4C warmer than at same time last night so frost not even on the radar.

Good frost here this morning, quite white. Down to minus 1C. However cloudy to the coast so probably no frost there.

It is in a warm spot, nestled between two houses, sheltered from all prevailing SW and W winds yet open to the North and gets full sun from mid morning to mid afternoon. But also ~600km North

MetService suddenly revised overnight lows down last thing yesterday but not enough. Some growers/gardeners will have been caught out. See Taupo dropped to -3C at 6am but forecast to be over 20C today. I haven't gone below 5.6 due to a SE breeze all night.

We had a frost here in Tawa this morning. The latest frost in the year we've had since we moved here. Luckily I brought out the frost cloth at 8 pm and protected what I could. The potatoes will be fine, but my dahlias won't be.

Crazy variation amongst PWS this morning, one at Kuratau, Lake Taupo showing -6 and may not just be in error.

Wow. Never would have guessed it had been that cold down there based on the weather here - mostly clear skies last night but only got down to 9C...

Seems like rare conditions last night prevented any mixing/homogenization allowing some really cold pockets to develop really quickly - almost what some call a "snap freeze".

Trying to work out if I beleive this PWS.
https://www.wunderground.com/personal-w ... 17#history

If Taupo airport hit -3C at 6am then it's possible this PWS is genuine.

^ Looking through the daily history for that station, data looks bad to me. Highs consistently between 5C and 12C for the last month looks really off...

Also, there's another PWS in Kuratau, a Davis VP2, which recorded a min of -0.4C this morning
