Plenty of damage around Auckland, still 120,000 without power. Chainsaws getting blunter by the hour.

The blame game is well and truly underway for not enough warning. This synoptic beast up was well and truly locked in @500 hPa 3 days out from the event, no surprises here ;-)

Next system is starting to sneak up as well on the SI. GFS projecting 45 to 60 knots @850 hPa across Upper NI on parts of Thursday and Friday.

I've seen photos of exceptionally early snow on Mt Pirongia and Tarawera this morning.
Spotted that snow on Pirongia this morning but didn't want to believe what was seeing, ridiculously early. Wondered if it was hail.

TonyT wrote:I really dont think the media have taken this storm seriously enough. The warnings have been there from various sources for a week or more, and no one seems to have got any traction in the media. I've tried, but it seems like the response is "its only autumn, the serious weather doesnt come till winter" (!). It will be interesting to see if they report on the consequences loudly (as they usually do with weather stories), or play it down to match their lack of interest pre-event.
I'll bring this up regarding the media not taking it seriously, while Tony may have ment Canterbury it rings true for the rest of the country.

Loud crack of thunder overhead here in Porirua, and apparently a good bolt that I didn't see, but like usual in this area not picked up on Blitzortung

Thunderstorms again just before 4 o'clock here at Tawa, north of Wellington.
They delivered a significant dump of pea-sized hail which is still hanging around.

Family report a good coating of snow on Mt Tarawera.

No thunderstorms here today although there could of been a flash overnight or early this morning out to the sea northwards from here. Mt. Peel and associated peaks had a good dusting of snow on them.
Thanks Mikey about alerting me about that Ts near West Melton. :-)

A dry afternoon here as the flow went more southerly, might see distant lightning in the west when it gets dark this evening.

Thunderstorms back over Tawa and Wellington tonight. Cloud comes over, the rain starts, then boom a couple of lightnings strikes and thunder, some hail, and then the cloud moves on. Then clearish skies again until 15 - 20 minutes later.

Very large CG strike in eastern suburbs of Wellington just after 7pm.
Looks like it ‘could have been’ a direct strike on the Aquatic Centre in Wellington

Been a while since posting but in regards to the lightning and tornados in taranaki its one of the worst thunderstorms iveseen in due to how much was going off...it was contacting the ground almost everysecond as i drove to work and saw sparks flying from trees and powerlines in every contact. Saw the grid go down and had to stop preparing a generator because of how dangerous it all felt being exposed out in that storm. Just non stop cracking and sparks...ill remember that one for sure.

I don't ever recall snow on Tarawera so early in the year when I was living there. (70s-early 90s) From the photos I've seen on Facebook, that would be a big dumping even in mid-winter. Rotorua's 9C max today must be an April low record.

I HATE this blame game nonsense. Even with a warning with plenty of lead-in time, what is anyone to do? Pull down all the powerlines until it passes and then put them back up? ARGHHHH Stupid people make me mad!

I was able to check my weather station tonight, peak gust was 106.9kph 10 April at 10:27pm. Lots of carnage out here in Swanson.

Next polar jet stream in this sequence is inbound with some precip later today for Auckland, possibly heavy squally.

Looks like this thread covers the period for tomorrow nights warm front in the north. Potentially thundery.

No, but for the vast majority of the public, have those at 1 news report on the severity of 120km/h gusts and tell people not to put their bins out on the street, tell them to tie down their trampolines. Reporting on cyclones 2 weeks out and then not giving this much airtime. Their priorities are clicks on websites.
