General June Weather

June starts with a splash for northern areas this weekend. Heavy rain/thunder/gales in exposed areas likely. An active front will be moving south over Northland Saturday to reach Auckland later in the day. Plenty of moisture with the front.

just add 850mb wind chart for Saturday afternoon. Shows low level jet with the front, quite typical in these sets. 50knots at 850mb means 50knot gusts are possible in exposed areas at the surface.

Indeed. A difference of 12.0°C recorded at 7:30am it seems.
For these two sites to be only ~28km apart by road, and perhaps 20k as the crow flies, that's pretty impressive.
Certainly not unusual round these parts, but I wonder what the largest temp difference between two "close-ish" sites would be?

Dunedin airport lies in a rarther sheltered vally[night time cold air inversion] while Dunedin only needs a light breeze off the ocean to get 6 deg overnight.

Two locations that i can think of up this way that would be similar and in less distance than the 20 k between Dunedin Airport & Dunedin City would be Gore Bay vs Cheviot.

Looks like there were some isolated patches of all-day fog around northern Waikato near the border with Auckland today - PWS at Mangatawhiri shows a max of 9C today with near 100% humidity

15C in Grey Lynn 7am this morning. A nice change back to milder weather.

An unstable atmosphere arrives over Auckland tomorrow but I think Monday the most likely day for a thunderstorm in Auckland.

In the Marlborough sounds there has been hardly enough rain to wet the ground this weekend despite all this rain forecast.

Upper cold pool breaching 20 degrees south of the equator within 72 hours according to all models. System 7 is about to be put in the oven.... in the tropics, 2nd week of June.... a touch unusual.

Torrential downpour in Parnell for a few minutes now... you wouldn't guess from looking at the radar

Another 8mm in the last 24 hours. 88mm for the month now with the June average well in sight.

Most models putting a subtropical low near the upper NI by early to mid next week originating from a tropical disturbance. The southern hemisphere version of the omega block looks to be breaking down with this system, as SE OZ starts to get more frontal action. This subtropical low will be system 7 (and last) in 22 days from the early may SSW event with a more normal programming resuming from late next week IMO.

For Auckland it is 3 or 4 fine sunny days now until a northern low starts impacting us early next week.

Possible pattern change to disturbed westerly coming up mid month for NZ.
