A cold easterly to atleast start next week. Westerly pattern is a nicer pattern for the South Island east of the Alps, not to say there can't be wintry weather in the westerly pattern weather mix this time of year.

Looks like a dry week or two ahead for us in the east of the south. Looking forward to it.

Re: General June Weather
I prefer westerlies in winter. They are generally not cold and can bring thunderstorm risks.

Back from U/Hutt/Wellington region over the long WE.
Leaving really atrocious weather there to a lovely fine and sunny day here in Geraldine.
A bit of snow along the Alps but not as bad as I thought it may be.
Warm day here with a light southerly and just under 16C

Atrocious on the other 2 days but you seem not to have noticed the lovely Saturday - or you weren't there ...NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Thu 07/06/2018 13:31 Back from U/Hutt/Wellington region over the long WE.

Yes. Saturday was quite nice as we managed to do a bit of gardening at my sister in laws place up the Moonshine Valley.

Re: General June Weather
Yesterday's passing of a warm front produced a heavy hail shower just east of here, we got a brief rain shower at the same time, what was interesting was how large the droplets were. But to have hail from a warm front? how common is that

Interestingly that warm front did raise the temperature here yesterday. Today much similar but a bit cooler.

Re: General June Weather
It was the most interesting of warm fronts in terms of cloud forms too, the showers we got from it developed very quickly over this area

Good.Would have been a bit warmer both in the city and at Kapiti where we were.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Thu 07/06/2018 17:32Yes. Saturday was quite nice as we managed to do a bit of gardening at my sister in laws place up the Moonshine Valley.
However it's been a lousy month so far and the last 30 days have been one of the dullest and dampest (though not especially high rainfall) I can recall for a considerable time.

No. Yesterday was a light southerly, whereas a bit of a NE picked up this afternoon.
Timaru airport was yesterday's national maximum at 16C.

Re: General June Weather
Down to 5.1c this morning, chilly for this part of the world.
System 7 of the SSW now showing the tropical disturbance near Fiji with -80c cloud tops this morning. Low level circulation should start to give models more clarity on it's movements over the next 24 hours. UKmet is showing a 980's extratropical cyclone near Gisborne next Wednesday, CMC and Icon similar. Others a less intense low near the upper NI / BOP.

Re: General June Weather
Looks mild for the next 10days for Auckland with highs 16-17C. Probably not much precip.
Re: General June Weather
It's a bit chilly in Browns Bay today!

Re: General June Weather
UKMet continues to upgrade on an NZ impact of an extratropical cyclone within 72 hours. Moving it further west on the 00z run with a 980 hPa bullseye on the Coromandel. Fairly decent impact on many areas including Upper NI, BOP etc...a wet easterly into SI as it moves down later in the week. Icon and BOM similar. GFS not that interested. EC run will be interesting now. Fairly big differences this close.
Edit: EC upgrades. Moves slightly west from 12z but more intense on NI with larger impacts on upper eastern SI areas.

Re: General June Weather
They must sick of the rain up there, mind you most of the rubbish logs would be gone by now.
Even though wet, the logs could be harvested for firewood and brought down south.
Firewood people down here are running short because most of the logs are exported to China.

Re: General June Weather
This morning's GFS bringing that low a lot closer... showing Auckland being affected by heavy rain now. UK model has the low center crossing Auckland as well. EC sticking with it landing around East Cape for now

Re: General June Weather
I would say an eastern seaboard rain event. My prediction, upto 300mm for Gisborne ranges, 200mm Hawkes Bay ranges. Auckland will still catch a bit of precip.

A real 'Anticyclonic Gloom" day here, with calm but overcast and grey skies and occasional drizzle with the barometer showing a surface hPa reading of 1030, all day.

Re: General June Weather
GFS showing some electrical potential for this weekend with fairly intense 300mb polar/subtropical jetstream modeled for north Tasman. A classic thunderstorm set up for the west of NZ.
