I was with spwill last night chasing that storm and it was not moving very fast so got a good lightning show.

I notice Brian's weather station got a gust of 50knots (93km/h) from the storm.

Possible waterspout/tornado for north coast of Taranaki on the cards this morning with veered low level flow and dewpoint 13C.

Yea I agree. Haven’t looked at any models but going by what I see here there is some very decent low level sheer. Just had a brief convective shower go over here.

Will keep an eye on the radar this morning, right now Kaitaia looks good for a storm, currently 16C there with a dewpoint of 15C. Auckland is 15C/dp14C

Interesting to see Christchurch Airport currently running at an average minimum for the month of 5.8C, a full 2.3C above the previous warmest June minimum back in 1971, towards the end of the week will bring the average minimum down a bit but this could be an exceptionally warm June in terms of minimums coming out, not sure if I ever remember seeing a month in Christchurch being 2C warmer or colder then the previous record...

Perception is everything I guess, when people are mostly outside during the day they will say it feels cold due to lack of sun and average maximum being 1C colder then the longterm average but when their tucked up at home they don't really get to experience the warmish nights as much.

Do you expect July to be different to June Tony in terms of the data you're seeing at the moment?

Perception of coldness surely has as least as much to do with daytime/maximum temperatures. The so far very dismal June here is thought by many here to be "cold" - mean temperatures are about average, but the persistent lack of sun denies opportunities to feel much of the "skin warmth" sensation.

Just 22.6 hours of sun in the first 16 days at Kelburn. 1981 had even less MTD but had a run of brighter days around the 18-21st. Not ruling out a record low sun tally for June yet.

Good point by Bradley.

Edit: Ch'ch Aero data is incomplete, but the first 16 days show 24.5 hours for Rangiora EWS and just 15.8 hours at Broadfield EWS.

A run of cold maximums this week and then some frosts at the end of the week will adjust those means further - the daytime maximums will ge a bit colder and the night time minimums will come back a bit.

Longer term I would expect to see further low pressure systems affecting us in July, but come August we could see an early switch to a more west to southwest pattern.

We are now getting localised convection with tiny hail falling out of what looks like not a lot. A long way from the rain free base. The rain free basses are very turbulent. Must be some good winds aloft today. Keeping a lookout for a funnel cloud.

It’s seems very warm considering we are near the shortest day of year. I don’t ever recall seeing such decent land based convection in mid June before

Quite a contrast to the weather down here.
Overcast and gloomy with hardly any wind and a constant temperature of around 7C since 10pm last night.
Very unusual

NIWA just released the spot in the south island that has had the greatest June mean temperature anamoly so far and surprise surprise it's Christchurch with a mean anomaly of +2.0C...
