Forecast: Snow is expected to fall to low levels overnight tonight (Tuesday) until early Wednesday afternoon. During this period expect significant accumulations in some areas above 400 metres, including Banks Peninsula, and also possibly above 200 metres on the Plains west of Christchurch, where amounts may approach warning criteria.

After persistent rain for over an hour the temperature has risen back over 3C but now we have heavy hail. We are at 60m asl roughly .

Yes Springfield certainly sits in an area on that map where there will be some decent snow falling yet the latest run of EC for Springfield on the Yr website it shows no snow at all for Springfield?

The yr model is a mesoscale model which runs on top of ECMWF output. Its not ECMWF. The two are different, but one underpins the other.

Interesting the temp difference between Gore -0deg and Invercargill and 6deg

Stewart Is does a good job at flicking a lot of the showers either side of Invercargill in a SW flow.

Yes agree very much Tony. M/S have really been struggling the last week. Missed the North Auckland downpours and flooding, Missed again with the Tologa bay deluge yesterday and missing with the snow today till the last minute. We can all see the models and what they are telling us yet they just stubbornly dont warn people until its too late. For the National broadcaster to be struggling to keep up is a bit of a worry.

Snow has been reported. in Methven, Mt Somers, Castlehill, Queenstown, Dunedin, Gore, Te Anau so far from what ive heard

I seem to recall Metservice did have watches and warnings for the heavy rain over the upper NI at the weekend. Certainly their Thunderstorm outlook mentioned the risk of severe thunderstorms and their severe weather outlooks on the days before mentioned the risk of heavy rain. .

Nevertheless In'gill gets a lot of showers in flows not far from that - certainly did in my day. The actual directions were probably more WSW or even W by S.

Edit: checking with a windrose diagram based on 50 years of data, the strongest winds - and probably a lot of the showers - were in the range I suggested. We just called them "south-westerlies" as it takes less time to say it.

Quite heavy shower bands been passing through in the past hour or so with temperature hovering around 3.5degC but has dropped down to 2.8 in the past 30minutes.

Snowing in Rangiora since 4.15am, was heavy now mixed with rain.
Edit. Just rain now and temp up a degree to 1.6C and a strong westerly for some reason.

I see the coldest and driest air is just reaching Canterbury now, will be interesting to see the how strong the cold convection off the sea is during the morning.

Sorry I was meaning aloft (850 to 500 hPa). Surface temps will fluctuate with the showers. An ob at Prices Valley just dropped from 1c to -1c in the last 15 min, it's coldest so far today.

It was brief and weak as it came through Chch just now. Only low topped clouds all the convection out back of Peninsula to sea. Looks like decent snowfalls in the Lyford area

Driving in to Christchurch this morning there was no snow even at the top of Sugarloaf (500m asl), looks like just a standard cold front in winter we get a few times a year though the south looks to be a little more full on...

Get away from the ocean and it's much colder, Chch 4C vs Rangiora 0.6C and shows down south with the difference between coastal towns vs inland even with low altitude.

Just my opinion - At higher altitudes atm (above 1500m), the temperatures are fairly stable, it's drier and very cold. If a strong cold convective shower comes off the sea, the better evaporation and melting process conditions nearer the coast will strengthen energy, super cooling the air temps near the surface and allow snow levels to drop. Your friend in Greta Valley at 50 asl would have been in one of those sweet spots earlier.
