Very rough in Napier. Wind is very strong. Looking at maps- low seems to be sitting out on the coast more than predicted and moving slow. 984 is a reasonably deep low.

UKmet 12z run is nailing the location and pressure of the low. It has White Island currently 989 hPa which it is and the centre of circulation 35km NNE of the island, which it is at 8am on radar. Low still 984 hPa and almost stationary.

edit: radar, UK model and ob for the thread record around 8am

Where will the blob of rain to the west of the centre track across the country?

My 2 bobs worth on the 9am sat pic.... she is a hard one to pick for tracking with her slow wobble. Seems to be moving WSW around 20 km/h ATM. Plenty of moisture at mid to higher levels for new development on the east side this afternoon.

My station collected 49mm over a 24 hour period from this system. Monthly rainfall already at 163mm, and now sitting at 909mm for the year so far (which is the highest at this point in the year out of all years in the station records).

Inland rd to kaikoura closed due to flooding and SH1 closing at 5pm so will be isolated again. Providing to be very fragile that new road.

31mm for here, now 118mm for the month, 773mm for the year. Already ahead of average for the month, well ahead of average for the year.

A little ironic that MS have a planned outage with the Canterbury radar on a severe weather event. The climate department who gave the June outlook of ' A wet month for eastern regions north of about Timaru' didn't speak to the maintenance department

A clear dry intrusion zone is ascending from the Tropopause around the occluded front moving towards the SI with warm moisture injecting in front of it. Things are about to get real around the Kaikoura coast.

This street light fell and was only just being held up by the power lines near Linton Camp on SH57. The winds were strong just north of Shannon but just to the south of Shannon in Levin was little to no wind. This is the area that gets the downslope wind from the Tararua Ranges.

Yes, well when it's up and running again, there will probably be no rain for them to test the upgrade
