Re: General July Weather
So this morning when out with the cows I got accidentally caught in a crazy storm. We lost two big trees, another snapped half way up and two of our hedge plants got snapped. I haven’t had a chance to take photos. Wind on the station peaked at 94km/hr. In the worst of it I couldn’t drive the quad bike and had to hop off and hide behind it. The bike was shaking heavily as if someone was on it and rocking it side to side.

Re: General July Weather
Just had some of the best sounding thunder I’ve ever heard. Must be the cold air. 3 very good sub 10 second flash to kaboom.

Re: General July Weather
Seen a few flashes of IC lightning out to SW while out for a run. Too far off to hear thunder.

Re: General July Weather
Wow, the Kaimai forcefeild is doing it's thing protecting me from the weather Jamie describes
Started my day driving through to Rotoiti, approaching the SH33/30 turnoff (Tikitere - Hells Gate) had some serious bands of wind driven high rate rain falling. Later at Rotoiti, post the event some decent Mamatus, photo doesn't do it justice. Sadly no thunder heard nor lightning seen.

Grr... That M word again.
Wasn't there, but would wager high it was nothing resembling an actual tornado.

Re: General July Weather
yea what i experienced today was fierce straight line winds. I struggle to believe there was a tornado anywhere today.tgsnoopy wrote: ↑Mon 09/07/2018 19:54 Grr... That M word again.

Re: General July Weather
More thunder here now.
The NRFA PWS at Hamilton AIrport seems to record higher wind speed than Metservice's site only a few hundred metres distant, possibly getting some funneling around buildings. Has recorded gusts close to or over 80km/hr several times today.

Re: General July Weather
Must be pizzing down in ChCh or around some areas according to the revamped Rakaia radar?
The rain sounded initially heavy, here, but quickly eased off with a disappointing total of only 5.3mm to 10pm.

Re: General July Weather
Yeah, there's also a PWS near Whakatane Aero that also fairly consistently records higher gusts than the airport (particularly during strong winds), probably also due to surface terrain funnelling.

It was quite heavy around 10-11pm and the radar was showing a fair few purple echoes across from Chch inland.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 10/07/2018 00:20 Must be pizzing down in ChCh or around some areas according to the revamped Rakaia radar?

Re: General July Weather
We did get a period of rain overnight (about 6mm at Jeff's station), but I don't recall any hail or thunder. Also a dusting of snow on Mt Herbert this morning.

Vector has issued a storm warning for Sunday 15 July between 6 AM and 9 PM. Just checked the three day forecast and there may be some wild weather action coming up.

Also the tides are the biggest we get in Auckland. tommorow (sun) 0853 -3.6m / 2119 -3.7m. Should provide some good action at my local narrow neck beach as well as the whole east coast with the gale NE

Re: General July Weather
Nope - maybe 2005 but the September snow in Christchurch certainly made up for the boring winter weather, too much to ask for another event like that to happen again though you’d think...
