Re: General July Weather
August 2005 was a wonderful winter month for many, mercifully quite unlike most winter months. Not nearly enough such "boring" months for me! I will never understand the desire for ever more of the crappy, unsettled, treacherous dreck that this country is subject to....

Re: General July Weather
Need a deep low like this in May 2015 that brought snow to low levels (200m on Wellington's hills) and huge waves to Wellington's south coasts because the low was moving slowly away to the east.

Re: General July Weather
Got pummelled out here this morn. Winds probably peaked much earlier, but Tiritiri was still recording gusts in excess of 100 km/h at 7am. Has eased off a little now. 17mm so far...
High tide about now…

Re: General July Weather
Just got another 12mm here in 20 mins - total 29mm to 9am.
Edit: MS very kindly tweeted this 8:40am radar image and mentioned that an Albany station recorded 32mm between 7-8am.

Re: General July Weather
The low forming about now north of Great Barrier not as clearly defined on this morning's run of ECMWF as last night's but still might give a late kick to the wind speed BOP/ Waikato as it goes across.

Re: General July Weather
Brighter weather arriving here now, around 40mm this morning, little or no wind at my place with this event.
I don't think the high tides have caused any significant problems around Auckland , I see high tide is a bit higher tonight.

50mm so far here. EC's last run (12Z) picked the crawling front, follows up troughs and larger rainfall totals quite well.

The second wettest day in my weather station history with 89mm. Looks to be clearing up now.

Re: General July Weather
Yeah I know, was such a surprise seeing another hourly rainfall over 30mm so soon after the last time it happened on Queen's birthday weekend.

Re: General July Weather
I had watched this one with some concern a couple of days out. As we got closer to the event it lost it's sting for us. Winds were up, but ultimately not of concern, as were the rainfall rates. Just 32mm for us yesterday.

Re: General July Weather
MS mentioned yesterday 'gusts of 117km/h recorded in the Colville Channel at 3am' and later 'gusts of 113km/h over the Hauraki Gulf', so not sure if the latter was also from the Colville Channel or Tiritiri Matangi Island? Below are a few more high gusts during the last 2 days...

Re: General July Weather
Downward propagating dynamical disturbance is originating from the middle levels of the stratosphere towards 500 hPa by the weekend around the Tasman. Watching with interest on the side effects on the tropics and sub tropics. Still too early to tell but this has the initial ingredients of a severe synoptic scale cyclonic gyre in maybe a couple of weeks around the region IMO

Re: General July Weather
Cyclone Tracy - I wish I could understand what that means... hopefully it means snow in the central North Island... though as you mention the tropics I suspect I may be wrong.
Incidentally, my Grandparents lived through your namesake - had their house demolished unfortunately...

Re: General July Weather
Still too early to tell but basically when ever the stratosphere mixes downwards into the troposphere (where the weather systems are generated), it can be quite volatile in the mid latitudes. Large quantities of tropical air can be transported towards the polar region due the breakdown of the stratospheric vortex. A significant rapidly intensifying surface low can be the result.SirSlingy wrote: ↑Mon 16/07/2018 16:09 Cyclone Tracy - I wish I could understand what that means... hopefully it means snow in the central North Island... though as you mention the tropics I suspect I may be wrong.

Yes, Severe TC Tracy is meteorologically legendary is many ways. She's changed a lot of things in OZ including building codes. An event your grand parents I'm sure would never forget.

In Napier for the WE. The wild weather missed there although it was a bit rough last night.

Re: General July Weather
Should be mainly fine in Auckland today but for isolated showers.
GFS is pointing to a thunderstorm chance for western North Island Thursday.
