Also flies and other annoying insects, wasps etc. will start making an appearance. o_O
The warmth is overdue. Cold start to the month over quite a substantial area.

Mean temperature here for the first 11 days of the month is equal to our average temp for the previous month of August... so looking forward to some warmer weather.

It appears to be dust and not smoke, that explains why the sun was deep red this morning, reminded me of the outback sunsets

Looking at the airport data today the warmest spot was Pukaki Airport and also Mt Cook Airport on 21C.

But mild temps over the whole country today.

It was like that down here as well.
A hazy smokey sky and the sunlight looking slightly orange on the white concrete.

Lovely day down here with the temperature at 21C with a light northerly blowing.
Still got that hazy sky though not as bad as yesterday.
Hearing one ot two lawnmowers going, so that is a sign of Spring.

Blowing a gale here this afternoon meaning it kept it cooler on 15deg. We often seem to get gales when there's no warning issued and when they are issued it wont.

Polar vortex is about to let the Aussies know that cold snaps aren't off the table yet. EC, Access R and GFS project snow down to 400m in Victoria and sea level in parts of Tassie. That upper trough then moves into the Tasman. It will be interesting to see if it gets things moving in the sub tropics early next week.

Hope not. Want the anticyclones to move NE over the upper NZ and clear the skies of lows around the Auckland area so the thunderstorm potential becomes less up there. ;)

A large inversion on the NZWP sounding last night which is why we have the anticyclonic gloom over the west of the North Island currently.

Sunny here this morning but there was plenty of irritating cloud over the west of the city yesterday. Still a big sunshine deficit to be caught up, both for this month and YTD.

Odd how sometimes the NW winds like today are strong inland and be calm by the coast, yet it can be the other way around other times, don't know how that works.

It's kind like a rollover effect isn't it? Hot day here now, up into the mid 20s

I reckon the NW winds tend to 'bounce' as it flows across the plains, that's why some days it can be windy in some places but calm in others. :-k
Lovely blue-dome day here today. Seems that the haze has cleared away. Bit of an easterly here.
