General September Weather

Unread post by TonyT »

Looking like a cold start to September with a spell of southeasterly airflow, and plenty of anticyclones to follow during the month.

Looks like some more action for the upper north overnight!
Metservice wrote: Issued at: 10:56am Saturday 1 Sep 2018

A front moves quickly across the north of the country overnight Saturday and Sunday morning. A disturbed west to northwest flow spreads onto central and northern New Zealand following the front.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms about Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula before dawn, and about the Bay of Plenty during the morning. These thunderstorms have the potential to bring localised heavy rain of 10 to 25 mm/hr, strong winds gusting 90 to 110km/hr and the possibility of a small tornado about localised eastern coastal areas. There is also the possibility one or two of these thunderstorms may become SEVERE.

In the west of the North Island from Waikato to Taranaki, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms mostly during the morning, but in Taranaki the risk may start before dawn. These thunderstorms could bring localised heavy rain of 10 to 25 mm/hr, strong winds gusting 90 to 110 km/hr and small hail.

A lower risk of thunderstorms covers remaining areas of the North Island north of Manawatu and also Buller, Nelson and northern Marlborough. No other areas of significant convection or thunderstorms are expected.

Yes, looking a very interesting set up.

Sub tropical and polar Jets are now interacting in the Tasman. https://earth.nullschool.net/#2018/09/0 ... 49,-30.936

Atmospheric river now running at around 40mm from the tropics on the occluded frontal boundary. Total Totals near 55 on most models early tomorrow morning around Upper NI, looking quite volatile for downpours and storms in the early hours of Sunday IMO.

Isol Ts moving into the west of the North Island this morning south of Auckland.

Had a torrential downpour here. Rain rate peaked at 2.25mm/min. I was out in it and we had a flash flood here. Gave us about 10mm in 10 mins. Now up to 22 since midnight with another heavy burst of rain coming through now.

Nothing like that down here. Just a light shower or two, whilst chopping firewood in antipating the southerly blast overnight/tomorrow. <3

Heard quite a few distant rumbles but missed out on most of the action here. A hit and miss 2mm so far.

Incredible to have the surface baro at 987hPa, a couple of days ago and now it is up to 1030hPa, and possibly intensify a little further, with little happening or nothing much of real significance, with the sudden rise .
Today it looks like 'anticyclonic gloom' with 0.4mm of rain in the gauge and still very overcast, especially in inland areas. I bet it's a lovely fine day on the Coast, Westland that is?

Dry in Chch today after showers overnight. Radar showed shower activity in many other areas of Mid and North Canterbury, so must be the Banks Peninsula rainshadow effect in the southeasterly flow.
