Agree with mike, theres a few chances coming up this week for storms across canterbury and marlborough. Thursday looks the best set up so far, strong upper jet so could be an interesting afternoon if it all stays true.
Cool today to see some punchy TCU, wind convergences lead to a few heavy showers in some areas.
Im surprised there was no risk today although there wasnt exactly any instability showing on the models either.
Finally an interesting week to look forward to, some big gales for guyfawkes weekend too.

I see Napier Airport got to 26C today. Napier may get a very hot summer from an El Nino.

Will keep an eye on skies tomorrow given the cold upper air.

Have been watching many funnel clouds form on top of the hakarimatas in the past 15 mins. I think the wind coming over the mountains is spinning the funnels up.

That funnel was a tornado. Was on the ground. Have been sent a video of it.

Not surprised to hear a touch down from a funnel. 40 to 45c differences from surface to 500 hPa at the moment over parts of the NI. Here the Baro is now 993.3 and falling slowly with quick downpours so far.

Another 12mm here today so far. Thunder heard in the outer Gulf around 8am in the first of 3 downpours between fine breaks today, along with a widespread power outage during the second one around 12:30pm.

There is a video on a farming Facebook page of the tornado. It was on their farm and only a couple hundred meters from it. Pretty awesome! It’s a private video tho so I can’t share it sadly.

New Plymouth airport now down to 990 hPa with the low level circulation still in the Tasman. Seems like it’s in the high 980’s now. Currently 992.3 here, sun out, wind picking up. Near -50c cloud tops in the Tasman to the SW of Auckland heading NE, should be some punchy showers and winds aloft tonight across the NI, especially upper as the next trough moves in.

That's normal. Auckland is always a magnet for thunderstorms with this scenario. <3

We missed out so far today. Often with NW flow we end up in a thunder shadow.

The area east of Hamilton has a history of landspout tornadoes.

Yet again like nearly all the weather systems of 2018, this current one is going to come well short of what the models predicted, were talking of 30-50mm a few days ago, had nearly 6mm so far and not looking likely to get much more.

Best thunder potential today looks between Taupo and Gisborne. Not impossible in Auckland but I think we would be lucky.

The bulk of the Tstorms yesterday were generated over land rather than sea, seasonal change.
A slight chance of thunder here this morning, showers backing off this afternoon. Tomorrow looks mainly fine but a few cloudy spells.
