Whats giving your station higher recordings John is more likely the adjacent buildings, and nearby street chip seal, trees etc. Where you were at WM you would have been getting accurate readings with your screen and wide open grassed areas.

Given the number of frosts John is recording, even on nights when other sites dont, I suspect its not an upwards shift due to heat sources, more likely lower humidity bringing an increase in daily range, i.e. warmer days and colder nights.

Wonder what would be the reason for this though

You are correct in saying this. It is a bit of an urban envoirement here as compared to WM.
Sometimes if I go for a stroll into town, like today for example, the temeprature seems to be the same but if I go for a stroll down in Temuka or Washdyke, the air defintely seems to be much cooler, so possibly due to the fact we are further inland and away from the coast, the easterly/SE seabreeze dosen't seem to affect us here rather than places nearer the coast.?

The warmest spot on the airport data today was Pukaki Airport on 28C. Wanaka and Alexandra on 26C.

Looks like temps should reach 28C in Canterbury tomorrow with the NWer. But then on Thursday snow probable on the tops of the foothills.

It’s starting to get interesting again in the polar region. Surface is warming with cold pockets spilling equatorward. Lower section of stratospheric polar vortex is losing shape. Sea surface temps are rising above normal around NZ.

Some key Ingredients to a mid latitude synoptic scale cyclonic gyre are starting to appear. It's about to get volatile in the next fortnight

I'm 6km inland from pleasant point near hanging rock. Its generally around 1-2c warmer than levels on a sunny easterly day. Even when I lived in Fairlie it was never much more than a couple of degrees warmer than levels as the SE sea breeze would blow up The opihi river.

Looking like an isolated thunderstorm risk for the west of the North Island late tomorrow into early Friday.
Probably top of the South Island as well. Looks like 500mb-19C with surface dp 14C in advance of a shortwave.

Have noticed large variations in temperature around the Christchurch area the last few days - now it's 26 degrees at the metservice banks peninsula station and just 12 degrees at the chch eastern suburbs station. Seems to also be low cloud or mist around New Brighton based on a webcam
