Looks like an intense anticyclone is set to remain very slow moving in the Tasman Sea this coming week.
Because of it's strongness,this high was responsible for the recent cold weather over NZ probably being the coldest event for the winter, even though it occured in Spring being a good example of Climate change.
Winter into Spring. Maybe a Spring into Summer and a Summer into Autumn maybe on the cards.
Anyway looks to hang around a while bringing settled weather to much of NZ for the oncming week with not much to report on this forum except if you to put on reports of lovely fine weather

The BOM forecast map for 10pm on Sunday (14th Oct) has the high slap bang between Tasmania and New Zealand at 1039mb. It will then drift slowly east declining a little.

Do these highs that drift across the Tasman contain a lot of cloud?

Yes, highs are a factory for producing stratocumulus. But there is variability and I am hoping the sunshine hours in the Tasman are above average this spring to warm it up faster.

Not too bad for cloud this week but yes some cloudiness, plenty of dry weather this week. Tomorrow looks largely a fine sunny day for much of the country.

I think the last time Akld Aero recorded over 1030 hPa was from a similar Tasman big-fat-high on June 30th. It recorded 1032.1 hPa that day, with temps down to 1.1C and fog in the morn, clearing to a sunny high of 14.3C. More cloudy with afternoon rain the next day though.

That anticyclone looks set to funnel some cold SW winds across here on Wednesday. GFS showing overcast skies and a max only around 15C.

Gentleman, thanks for the replies regarding cloudiness within anticyclones. It is nice to know that it is not just the UK that can be blighted by overcast skies when the pressure is high! Stratocumulus sheets can be a real problem for both forecasters and the rest of us as subtle wind direction changes can introduce drier air (for example) and clear the cloud to give either an unexpected sunny day or frosty night.

Barometer hit 1033.4 hPa at 9am here. Currently sitting on 1032.3.


Southern hemisphere version of the Omega block, well and truly in place for this region. Interesting little side piece is the upper low that has nested into the block, around the great Australian bight. With high pressure pushing moisture into the upper low, there will be some angry storm days in SE Oz over the coming days. Fairly boring for NZ though ….

Good news as we are doing double crossings of both Cook and Foveaux Straits in the next two

Despite being anticyclonic in Southland we have had light showers periodically today

With this anticyclone, could be lots of conditions to form cloud layers rather than warm sunshine that the media want to portray
.....also where this high is situated, dosen't mean warm weather as where if the high was situated over the Chathams, it would be another story.

You're probably right
although it could be the next 2 anticyclonic events
....anyway, the anticyclone delivering a perfect blue dome day down here with a slight sea-breeze and nearly 20C.

I reckon you close, but not quite, i'm going for 'the next two weekends'

Certainly looks warm from Labour weekend out to the 25th, those are early Summer temperatures.
