Not looking as good as yesterday, at the moment, with high cloud cover ....but then things may perk up later.
Have the SE sea-breeze and DP at 10.4C here at the moment, so ?

Looks good on the radar.
Light rain falling here and a few sferics on the AM radio, all of a sudden.
....but sadly, it has become overcast with low cloud moving in from the SE covering the whole sky so a chase or some photos is out of the question :-s

Thunderstorm with heavy hail in Sheffield reported from Facebook. I can see the towering clouds from far off Akaroa.

There were random rumbles of distant thunder from your direction Richard, from about 3pm to 5.30pm.

....all over bar the shouting, down here. Miserable day with low cloud arriving earlier than forecasted when it was supposed to be fine :x Too much moisture, I think?
Lower cloud now clearing away but not interesting, however, but good to hear that Sheffield got a thunderstorm and looks like inland Marborough judging by the rain radar.

Better looking day today, here, than yesterday, better surface conditions with some weak Cu bubbling up over the hills but not expecting much.

A little cloud cover for the Molesworth run would not be unwelcome, looks decent conditions for it.

Sunday night into Monday morning looks interesting for South Island thunderstorms. GFS has 500mb air down to -34C. Then into next week a cut-off low hanging over us and high pressure not getting much of a look in For a while.

BIg change in temperature coming early next week. Will it be cold enough for snow in the higher towns like Tekapo?

A massive upgrade in the latest run of EC in terms of both rainfall and snow amounts for Canterbury, places like Lake Tekapo predicted to receive 20-30cm of snow from monday night you Wednesday and even places like Methven predicted to get between 10-20cm. In terms of Christchurch gale force southerlies and between 80-100mm of rain. This is shaping up to be even more impressive then last weeks system!

Current GFS modelling suggests my record low November daily maximum could be broken... thought we were done with winter!

Yes, potentially a big weather week next week with an east coast low and some cold air in the mix, heavy rain eastern parts and some high country snow , heavy showers/hail for the North Island. See how the models look over coming days.

There is major displacement underway for Southern Hemisphere stratospheric polar vortex. By Monday it will be in the raise alarm territory as it splits into 2 circulations and deforms. The polar jet and long wave troughs are about to cut loose into the mid latitudes. IMO, models will struggle to compute the impacts on the surface from this point until the cyclonic gyres start spinning. Multiple major cut off lows from SE OZ to the Chathams. Bombogenesis is becoming likely between these areas over the next week.

A tweet from NIWA states that Wellington was the joint warmest place in New Zealand on Tuesday (12th Nov) and suggests that this is not a common occurrence. The MetService map of maximum temperatures also gives a high of 24*C at Tokoroa and 23*C at a few sites, including Palmerston North, Masterton + Hanmer Springs.

The highest temperature in the Wellington METARS was only 20*C for that day, so I presume the NIWA site is in the city itself?

EDIT: I got the date wrong - Tuesday was the 13th, and as Nev points out in the post below, the METARS for Tuesday have a max of 17*C for Wellington Airport.

That Wellington temp of 23.9C on Tuesday was taken from NIWA's dodgy looking 3-year-old Compact Weather Station (CWS) at their Greta Pt campus at Evans Bay (about 2 km north of the airport). Wellington Aero and Kelburn (MetService HQ) only got to 18.4C and 18.6C respectively that day, so your METAR reading of 20C must've been from the day before?

P.S. MetService's Wellington TV-temp of 20C on Tuesday may have been from Porirua (20.2C)?
