Highly doubt it given the river is flowing at ~2000m^3/s and dropping with the stopbanks being designed for ~4700m^3/s

That reporter does not help the situation by relying on "eye witnesses" to tell him the Waimak is breaching its banks whilst he reports from the comfort of his desk at Newstalk ZB. Bad reporting inaccurate and darn well scare mongering for facebook clicks. Unfortunately this reporting causes the public to blame the media for fake news.

Been raining continuously here in Geraldine since yesterday. 48.6mm since 10pm last night.
Pretty sure I heard a distant roll of thunder in the early hours.
Temperture cooling down to 1C with sleet falling with the rain from after 10am.
Intersting to see how much snow is up there when this clears?

Not too heavy by the photo I've seen, but enough to begin to settle....

Reports of snow to 100m in inland Canterbury from a few on Facepalm. One stating it is a severe warm air advection event.

Some decent cooling under the heavy precipitation
I see on MS it is currently 2.7C at Ashburton, would be unusually cold in June for the time of day.

If anyone had bothered to check Ecan they would find a statement the Banks are not under any threat. Reporters inciting possible panic like this should be called out.

Waimakariri River Position Statement
Scheme Performance (9/11/2018)
This was posted @ 11-15 Friday November 9

In response to a number of calls received the following is a statement re the above:

"The Waimakariri River protection system is performing as it is designed to do and we have no problems anywhere from the Gorge to the sea on both sides of the river."

Below is a plot of all of the annual maximum river flows for the Waimak at the Old Highway Bridge, for this current event the peak flow has been 1983m^3/s

That's quite astounding for 1957, 3900 cumecs is a phenomenal flow rate!

The deep reds on the Canterbury radar seem quite well set at the moment.

Snowing on the traffic cam. (Source)

I can remember seeing photos of the Fairlie Flyer train shunting along the main street of Fairlie in November 1967 with snow on the ground then.

Some rainfall amounts around this area are, here- 40.4mm Waiau 25mm and Cheviot 20mm. The 40 mm here is going to do wonders as its come straight after much of the silage and hay has been processed, those without irrigation should now get a good second cut.
