In the central and western part of the city the sun has been out most of the day despite some large cloud masses, but now looking ominous to the east and south.

A very blustery southerly here(Thornbury) all day .Winds averaging 25 knots .Temps around 8 C with frequent showers , some with small hail .Section starting to look bedraggled with twigs and leaves strewn everywhere .One tree by my kitchen has taken a lean and will have to removed tomorrow as the branches are hitting my kitchen windows . A day to sit inside and watch DVD's

Main rain band tonight looks to be moving ashore between Timaru and Ashburton. Will be interesting to see how far north it gets. Models have been chopping and changing all day regarding who gets the rain. Something tells me its a Christchurch south event but who knows. waiting game now!

GFS not predicting much rain at all for Christchurch tonight and tomorrow, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get a substantial amount, looking at the way that band is moving currently.

That snow around Queenstown this morning was convective snow (cb's). Very unusual for November.
I guess we can call this El Nino weather?

Based on the system so far I'm not expecting anything out of the ordinary up here in the CHCH, and neither is metservicesnowchaser01 wrote: ↑Mon 19/11/2018 20:43 GFS not predicting much rain at all for Christchurch tonight and tomorrow, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get a substantial amount, looking at the way that band is moving currently.

Sunny cold morning in Auckland but weak cb about. Fingers crossed for something local to develop today.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a waterspout or two reported tomorrow from upper NI, flow will be more northerly.

Amazing for this time of year, but not unheard of. In 87 when i left school i worked on a farm on the inland road to Kaikoura, they had 20cm on Christmas eve a year or two earlier

Hate to bag on metservice all the time, but surely they could muster the resources to send a team out to do a survey of that tornadoes path... Instead they ask on Facebook if any of there followers could do it instead there have been a good number of tornadoes in the last couple of years and you would think they'd be trying to learn as much as possible

Re: Heavy rain/tornado/snow/wind event. 18-21 November
MS are not asking the public to go out and survey the tornado's path. What they are asking for is footage or photos of damage, with drone footage being particularly useful, so that they can assess the tornado's strength. The problem is that most of the damage, like downed trees, etc, usually gets cleaned up pretty quickly.Rogue wrote: ↑Tue 20/11/2018 10:02 Hate to bag on metservice all the time, but surely they could muster the resources to send a team out to do a survey of that tornadoes path... Heard some thunder out in the gulf just now. From the radar looks like South Auckland and North Waikato would be the spot to see something interesting next few hours

Decent moisture plumes over the Tasman, West and NW of Auckland on the 11am water vapour image. Radar might look quite busy in a couple of hours.
