Storms - northern half of NZ 21/11/2018
Given how wide spread the risk area takes in today, a thread may as well be started.
From the Metservice -
Valid to: Midnight Wednesday 21 Nov 2018
Issued at: 7:54am Wednesday 21 Nov 2018
Cold temperatures at upper levels and daytime heating are expected to bring unstable showery conditions to the North Island and the upper South Island today.
A trough spreads east across northern and central New Zealand this afternoon and evening. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms for much of the North Island, which may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 25mm/hr and 10 to 20mm hail. However, the risk is considered low in coastal Gisborne, parts of Hawkes Bay, in Wellington and along the coast from Kapiti to the south of Taranaki as indicated on the chart. The risk of thunderstorms reduce to low in Auckland and Northland from evening.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in inland parts of Buller, Nelson, Marlborough and the far north of Canterbury, which may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 25mm/hr and hail of 10 to 15mm diameter. There is a low risk of thunderstorms over much of the remainder of the upper South Island as indicated on the chart.

So so unusual to have the first building of the day to the east, normally start building around the foothills first.

Uninteresting morning so far. Been dull and cold with some light rain. Perhaps a bit of heating would help get things going

We had a clear cold night here, then clouding over early with cool showers to kill instability. We will have some sunny breaks this afternoon and increasing instability but I think less local convergence than yesterday.
Will keep a watch for anything interesting

Finally caught a decent shower. Still only had 10mm from this entire event. Heard a rumble of thunder not long ago.

Yeah same, it went very dark and gloomy as if there was stormy weather incoming... then just a bit of light rain.

Nice Richard, I thought there might be something your way today. I posted about it last night but in the general November thread. "wrong thread"
There is some castalanus "your favourite word john" over the port hills tonight and TCU looking north as I drive home to rolleston.

The storm bought with it 11.2 mm of rain and a small amount of pea sized hail.
