Is there a chance that Southland storm is rotating? Would love to see better radar shots of it. Looks very odd on radar we have available!

Overcaste day with low clouds and fairly persisitent precip in Auckland today. Not a nice day although not cold with max 21C.

There may be an isolated LP supercell over the east of the South Island tomorrow south of Timaru or in Southland.

Next trough coming in from the Tasman is kicking off quite a few strikes on Northland ATM. Also quite a few sparks just off the west coast of Auckland.

The Northland portion was well indicated in the modelling. The storms are elevated. Hopefully Auckland can catch a storm.

non stop spherics on the am band!

Interesting, can you tell us what numbers your looking at for future reference as to why a severe thunderstorm like that would accour? I can see high instability around timaru south.. strong jet stream etc and lots of surface moisture but the upper air isnt that cold and no real S change.
Thanks in advance 😊

I hope you are wrong. Maybe we should start an online petition and start hassling some politicians or something?

Expecting to hear thunder here shortly but it could miss us, north Auckland looking better placed.

Thunder going off every 10 seconds or so in Hamilton atm, heading into Raglan now, will be good 😊

I often look at lapse rates and anything over 6.5 is potentially quite unstable. The lapse rates will steepen to 7.0 later this afternoon for Otago/Southland. 500mb temps quite cold at -20C. Some upper flow and 300mb divergence there to assist. Will come down to degree of surface heating as airmass is capped.

Where do you go to see lapse rates? Would be nice to see some severe hail!! Could be oppotunity for you to go chase john being close to you. Driving into Christchurch from rolleston this morning, its abit unstable already and had sporadics

Distant thunder to west.

Mike I just compute the lapse rates off the gfs. Temp difference between 850mb and 500mb devided by the hieght difference.

Some very impressive anvils over the Southern Alps this morning, very picturesque. However I was driving, so no photos unfortunately.

Rumbling away in the west, distant.

More or less core punched the storm as I came into work this morning, some very nice pink positive forks come which lit entire sky up..... Driving into it was interesting as it looked featureless and had dark slight green hue to it. Not a bad storm 😊, despite being rather messy....

Line number 2 coming into Raglan now,, thunder rumbling away...

One front through at my location(Thornbury) mid Southland . Currently overcast 14C .5.1 mm in the gauge.Satellite photo shows a gap then the next trough .Sky will need to clear for some surface heating

Hearing distant thunder now to the west. Hopefully doesn't do the usual trick and die away as it moves east...
