Strange to see this morning's thunderstorm outlook removed a bunch of areas from the risk zone despite these areas already experiencing thunderstorms

I’m on a Southern line train to Britomart. The flashes and thunder seem constant. Big crack just as we arrived at Middlemore about 5 mins ago. Glad to be on the train!

It's been continuous lightning and thunder here for the past couple of hours. Virtually no let up. And it is intensifying. It's just so gloriously cosy with the Xmas lights on the inside and the lights and sound effects from outside.

When your out working under trees with a pick axe and a cg lands less the 10 seconds away hahah. I was quick to drop the metal object and walk to shelter away from trees.

Impressive amount of lightning and thunder as the band went through here, didn't get much in the way of rain though

I had a number of close CG, 1-2 seconds to thunder. IC lightning was frequent.

Approaching jet stream triggered the storms. 500mb wind chart for 6am.

Wellington to Rotorua & Auckland to Rotorua flights diverted in to Tauranga. Our Apron isn't large, if the Waikato storms divert others it could fill up quite quickly.

There is a more distant bolt first in that video then the close strike. Wonder of the first is a separate CG or part of the same one?

They got hit there, it is always random where the main cells track. No doubt some intense falls go unrecorded because heavy rain can be very localised with thunderstorm events.

Yes, there must have been a huge fall of rain in the head waters of our local river last night as it was not only in flood but the amount of slit it was carrying showed how intense it was
