That will never happen...
I hope you are wrong. Maybe we should start an online petition and start hassling some politicians or something?
About that Tornado Tim said to me that we'll be able to buy data from them in the future. They say in this video: https://www.facebook.com/MetService/vid ... 03/?t=1374

When they say 'providing a new e commerce capability that will support self service access to data' could this mean that they'll sell radar, lightning tracker etc access to us weather enthusiasts rather than businesses only??

The NW has kicked in here and stableized the air a bit but on saying that there is a cell going up behind Timaru way from here at the moment.

Delayed post, chased with Matt (Thunder081) in the Manawatu on Sunday 2nd Dec. Easy chase with lots of interesting things to see:
Rapid intensification and the storm developed supercell-like features, didn't last long and I shouldn't get too excited but it was great structure to look at

DSC_8354.jpg
Matt spotted what I called a shear funnel (?) Formed towards the front of the storm and was not attached in any way to the cloud base

Very long and well defined outflow boundary / roll cloud

Razor wrote: Tue 04/12/2018 10:07 NIWA reporting via Twitter Auckland (Mangere) just had it's wettest December 1 hour on record, 31mm
NIWA also said that Mangere's 31.4mm yesterday was Auckland's 2nd wettest summer hour on record, after 36.4mm on Jan 8, 1975 (probably Akld Aero?). However, both claims are ridiculous; many Auckland sites have recorded higher 1 hour rainfalls in both Dec and summer.

In fact, I think Auckland holds the record for NZ's highest 'non-mountainous' 1 hour rainfall, i.e. 109mm at Leigh on May 30 (1:30am to 2.30am), 2001, and 107mm at Whenuapai on Feb 16 (1:40am to 2:40am), 1966. Also note that Albany recorded 61.3mm in the hour to 9am on Jan 23 this year (or 76.4mm over a 60 min period).

I think Auckland's highest December 60 min rainfall is probably 61.5mm (or 41.5mm 5pm to 6pm) at Albert Park on Dec 16, 1984. And the 2nd highest is 47.1mm (or 45.3mm 8pm to 9pm) at Whenuapai on Dec 17, 1985.

Regarding hourly rainfalls, I'm pretty sure that Leigh's 109mm is the highest "non-mountainous" reading. Cropp Waterfall recorded 134mm in the hour to midnight, 8 January 2004. Whenuapai's total for 16 Feb 1966 was 10.23" (260mm).

There are some interesting unofficial figures floating around out there too. There is an unofficial reading of 124mm in one hour at Matauri Bay (Far North) https://hwe.niwa.co.nz/event/April_2000 ... nderstorms

And there were a number of extremely high hourly totals during the weather bomb event in June 2002, e.g 97mm in one hour at Te Aroha. And an unofficial reading of 125mm in 25 minutes in Coromandel Town (seems too high to be true, IMO) https://hwe.niwa.co.nz/event/June_2002_ ... ather_Bomb

The Matauri Bay reading might be OK, but I wouldn't believe the Coromandel one ...

I agree 30mm in an hour is not exceptional for Auckland. I was a bit surprised at the way the media made a story of it yesterday.

Judging by the radar that rain band looks to have a nice sharp line to it.. so could be a gust front coming.. could be worth a photo?
Although doesn't look overly unstable as it did an hour ago.

Looks good on the radar but high cloud and light rain here simce 10am with a light westerly.
Nice and sunny earlier this morning which I thought might be good but not really.

Exactly. It's happened 6 times here in the last 8 years. 40mm in an hour however feels more significant (yet to record an occurrence of that)
