Some nice shots of the lightning around Auckland on the TV One news this evening.
Got annoyed when they said that NZ as a country got the thunderstorms, when it was mainly around the North Island, especially Auckland .

The massive anvil streaming away from that cb shows well on the radar

That Thames cell looks amazing right now. Can’t get a photo to do it justice. I should get a nice lightning show from it.

There's some good mammatus visible on the underside of that anvil as it's crept closer

I know! Can't figure out why thumbnails come up like that, but when you click on them they're fine. Anyway, I was lying down watching the light show last night.

Notice on the day that the storms went right through the night it appears as if they were building on a big outflow boundary that was moving NE. The radar time lapse shows something of that nature.

That was an impressive anvil last evening from a small thunderstorm near Thames.

Noticed a large rotation on the 13th at 8.22pm moving down the western side of Lake Taupo that ended up still rotating by the time it reached the northern Ruahine ranges

I noticed quite an intense shower popped up near the Auckland/Waikato border this afternoon, a PWS at Mangatawhiri recorded 25mm in an hour. Not sure whether it had any lightning though.

Re: Widespread T-Storms 11-16 Dec
This storm delivered 100mm to a rain gauge in Gordonton. Not sure on how long it took to fall but I would think no more than an hour. I wasn’t too surprised to hear of 100mm when I saw the amount of flooding in paddocks and across roads.jamie wrote:Gone for a drive to find hail as it was just sliding past my house. Big flash flooding in Gordonton.

Re: Widespread T-Storms 11-16 Dec
This was the view of the Saturday cell from Swanson that approached from the north-west with so much potential and fell apart as it arrived. I'd be up at Waimauku earlier in the day and had seen it build and build to the west. Rushed home to tie the trampoline down which in hindsight caused the cell to fall apart before it got to us.
