Windy in Auckland this morning but it should moderate during the day.

GFS indicating peak gusts of 60 knots for the eastern Otago/Canterbury tomorrow.

Managed a break from the wind overnight but its back again this morning, its certainly been a prolonged period of wind here since Saturday.

Yea anyone else sick of this wind. It’s just non stop strong wind that’s drying out the ground rapidly. It’s not even a warm wind. Horrible!

The thing I don't like about it most is that it makes the evenings cool off quite quickly, so that even by 7pm it doesn't feel particularly warm outside most days.

This week always looked like a bit of a rough week but next week looking better and hotter for the whole country.

Maybe some instability in February.

Lower humidity and more breeze for a cooler feel but for me it has still felt warm, I would call it a good January this year. Sheltered Grey Lynn average 16.5C - 26.5C.

While the dry weather is not good for dairy farmers there are other industries that prefer the dry weather.

Yeah, been fairly average weather for holiday just completed in a location exposed to South and West. But nowhere near as bad as January 2017 when at times even a jumper was insufficient for late evening walk, close to needing a jacket as well. Thst was almost cause for despair!

Looks like some serious heat across the east across the country from sunday! 850mb into the low twenties, even mid twenties in a week!

What’s the rule of thumb on 850 temps. How much do you add to get ground temp?

Tasmanian smoke is getting thicker to the west, wouldn't have taken long to get over with these gales.

^ Ah! That's what it is. Wondered about the 'milky' sky and tonight's sunset.

As a very rough rule add 16C if there is plenty of sun and light winds.

There are variables. For example on January 6th Auckland had an 850mb temp of 18C but the airport only recorded 24C. A freash SW airstream brought in cooling from the sea.

In the east of NZ in sunny NW conditions add 18C to the 850mb temp.

We were at the northern edge of the smoke trail, I could see it running WSW to ENE, to the north of this sky clear as.

The night got warmer here after 10.00pm here when it was 17.7deg at its lowset and by 1,00am 21.6deg

Another very warm night in Christchurch, the airport down to a min of 23c overnight. Its already 26c at 8am and with the NW to kick up I'd expect to see some temps close to mid thirties today across the region before the Southerly change.

While the lower layers and surface will have a robust subtropical ridge, 2 fairly decent cold breaches being projected by GFS within 6 days over the tropics / subtropics at tropopause levels. Its about to get lively in February north of NZ.

Signs of adjusting, I was actually able to sleep!

Pushing 30/31 at 11am from Chch to Amberley where I am now, great weather. Plenty of rolled up hay in view on the commute this morning.

Australian monsoon trough setting up over NT as well, I saw the BOM commenting on how late that was.
