General January Weather

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Welcome to the New Year.
A warm start seems to be on the cards to start off the New Year but things may happen as the month progresses on.

I am not a fan of a slow moving ridge in the Tasman Sea. Auckland tends to end up with southwest flow which can mean lots of stratocumulus. Looks that way for first week of the year.

The first thunderstorms of 2018 look like occuring over the eastern ranges of the North Island tomorrow. Cloud tops 12km due to the very high tropopause over NZ currently.

Looks we are jumping straight from a wet pattern into a very dry one.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

Currently cloudy southwest conditions here, might see the cloud burn back a bit this afternoon, should get good cloud burn off here tomorrow.

I see low cloud is clearing central North Island for some afternoon heating and late heat showers/storms.

Back to the 'clagg' here to start off the New Year, with some early drizzle.
However, remaining rather cloudy once the low cloud layer cleared from early afternoon.
Not cold though, with a temeprature of 22C.

Cleared away now and sunny but with high cloud, calm and warm in sheltered sunny areas.
Shame it wasn't like this for last night. [-X
We did get a shower this afternoon with a couple of heavy drops.

A beautiful morning in Chch, as I got out to Godley Head this morning the sun came out strongly, before cloud rolled in through the afternoon. Looking hot overall the next few days.

Hopefully the ghosts of last year’s awful parting weather are banished

While there is no such thing as a relaible 15 day rainfall forecast here is the gfs output anyway. Wet in the south and drier in the north.

15 day accumulated total.

That would be nice NZstorm .I have been looking at this model for the last two weeks and the forecasted rain model does not equate to reality .Currently negotiating with my neighbours to borrow some water .If no rain within the next three days we will run out despite rationing. Yes I have a 10000 litre tank but it went in at a time when we had more reliable regular rainfall

. The Aparima River is 500 meters away .Some bores have been drilled and go down hundreds of meters which is expensive . People tend to rely on rain water to get by Richard

Bored water is hard with leaching from farming entering the water table There is a problem with bored water from Riverton which is the next town down the road which is destroying hot water tanks

I see there was only about 34mm for Invercargill in the last 30 days. Rain has certainly resumed at Milford - about 420mm from 29 December.

The strength of the subtropical ridge will undergo a stress test at some point heading into mid January. The NZ media will probably start to catch on in a few days. Still early days at the moment, much can change. https://www.weatherforum.nz/phpBB3/view ... 42#p179342 Back to the popcorn :>
