Heard a few distant rumbles to the W-NW. Rain has pushed the dewpoint up to 18C.

A beautiful cool change with the SW and rain coming in. The sky is darkening and it’s pretty solid rain, no rumbles heard in the centre of town though.

Queenstown airport at 5pm reported a southerly of 43knots, gusting 57knots, temperature 6C and thunder! Very odd for January.

Some house-shaking gusts interspersed with calmer, breezy periods. This is really cool to watch especially knowing that it's a brief interlude to a very warm period in summer.

Kaikoura Airport had a gust of 77knots with that southerly change.

Cold this morning over the South Island with Pukaki Airport on 1C and Queenstown and Timaru Airport 3C.

That southerly change was impressive. The MetService website gives gusts to 139km/hr at Le Bons Bay, 111km/hr at Lyttelton and 94km/hr at Christchurch Airport.

Are there any published papers on the mechanism of this type of weather event?

just add the Kaikoura Airport reading was 142km/h.

I remember flying into Dunedin a few years ago and seeing one of these gust fronts from the air. The sea under the gust from was white. Would have made a good photo if I was organised.

All clear after the short burst of rain last night. More than happy to have a fairly dry January, as in the last 4 years (since Feb 2015 that is) we have generally been deprived of dry sunny midsummer months. In addition, 3 of the 4 Marches were mediocre.
