Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Nam sounding for Western Oklahoma Monday. (Tuesday in NZ)
Amount of early convection will determine whether the set up gets a SPC high risk. Good sunny periods will increase the risk for long track tornadoes.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Nightmare trying to meet up today haha. Storms rolled through Dallas at the exact wrong time. I was delayed and the others diverted because of the storms. Joy!

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Those big upper level winds mean tornadoes will move rapidly, 50km/hr +.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Hard to determine a chase target today, looks like it's just going to explode everywhere.

Had a cg hit somewhere within about 50m of the hotel while I was standing in the car port Tricky chase day, we caught a couple of tornados at the start of the day and a stunning shelf cloud/lightning show/sunset to timelapse.

Snowing in Denver with temp on 0C. Probably not that odd given its 1600m elevation. But the average daily max for this date is 22C.
Rapid City has reported snow today as well.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Caught up with one of the NZ crews at Macca's while they were there for Breakfast yesterday in Childress TX & got my NZStormchaser T shirt off Brendan. Ended up effectively following them whilst acting independently at the start of the day, so we also broke the Tornado drought from last year. Looking like a push up to Kansas today. Not sure where they stayed, but we went back to the same motel in Childress. Unfortunately/fortunately the atmosphere hadn't cleared out and the day lacked surface heating. Storms cycled, going up, lacking inflow due to lack of surface heating and going outflow dominant quite quickly, many times we saw the cycle repeat. Made chasing very difficult, called it & moved supercells to find the one that looked great was collapsing and the one we left had recycled and looked good. On the positive side, we didn't see any strong, ling track damaging tornadoes destroying communities which was a concern. Likewise, we ended our day taking lightning photos, got back to the motel around midnight.

Solid cloud cover also spoils the viewing and makes the day a lot less photogenic.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
6 kiwis from two cars have met up at a hotel in Hutchinson, KS. Today was a hard day again with storm motion very fast. Cold setup today. Nothing great to see today.
Targeting the Oklahoma setup tomorrow, but capping will be the limiting factor.
The next day looks great tho.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Roger Edwards was blaming yesterdays high risk bust on the advection of a 700mb thermal ridge (EML) into the set up from the Mexican Plateau.
Looking back at yesterdays observed OOZ sounding from Norman, definitely shows a nasty in there at 700mb. The warm nose would have enhance the stratocumulus development blocking out the sun.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Chased this storm till north of Joplin MO. Saw a early tornado but tough road options, trees and police road blocks made it a tough day. Another long drive this morning to the next target, OK and TX panhandle from E KSNZstorm wrote:Radar detected debris up to 22,000 feet in a tornado in SW Missouri today.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
Went on my first US storm tour, May 5th to May 13th, had three days of storms, saw my first US tornado (cone tornado near Belpre, Texas), then a weather system cleared out the storms for the rest of the tour, which was a bit stink.03Stormchaser wrote: ↑Sun 26/05/2019 16:24 Been my worse trip, thinking about calling it quite a couple days early and going to Vegas. Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
just add the El Reno tornado was rated EF3.
It is a reminder that MCS can support highly dangerous tornadoes.

Re: USA Severe Weather 2019
That is a nice tornado in New Mexico today.
I'm picking cloud cover and early storm development has been a bit of a spoiler for chasing over recent days.
