Yes. I can remember back in 2012, I think, when Timaru got to 42C, just short of the NZ record , when MS said the amount of clothing required was nothing. That would be great for the local nudist colony   8)

Correct, but only by 0.2 of a Swedish rounding... . 41.3 Feb 6 2011 as per attached NIWA graphic. Pretty close!

i just noticed that you can visit the old site. theres a list of things at the top and at the right end of the screen it says "more" click on that and a whole list comes down and then you click on "visit the old site" and it redirects you to the old metservice so for any one who prefers the old site you can just go to "more click on "visit the old site" and you there

Yes, but to repeatedly claim that Timaru got to 42C, when 41.3C and 40.3C would normally be rounded off to 41C and 40C respectively, can get a bit frustrating after a while.

Also note that in that graphic, the 41.3C at 'Timaru' in 2011 and the 40.0C at 'Timaru Gardens' in 1908 are both from virtually the same site.

And seems we're already completely off topic here, the terms 'Swedish rounding' or 'Swiss rounding' appear to be unique to NZ. Some Swedish friends of mine have never heard the term - like most other countries they simply call it 'cash rounding'...

Just checking through my weather diaries, it was Waitangi Day 2011. 41.3C., not 2012 as I said in an earlier post. #-o

Just so. Inaccurate "legends" get started if one is not rigorous.

Not fussy on the new site at all. All they needed to do was increase bandwith on the old site in times of bad weather/high traffic times. I'm guessing a lot won't bother with them now.

Just as an aside, February 2012 was cool (0.8C below the 1981-2010 mean), with daily maximums even further below average, and very cloudy, especially in eastern areas. Couldn't have been very good for the grapes in Marlborough with cool temperatures and abnormally low sunshine.

Messy compared to the past site in my opinion - too much information on one page.

Whole page only visible if I un-zoom to 33%.

Can't see any way of finding any other town, only found Ashburton because I had it bookmarked.

"Feedback" tag reads "javascriptvoid0" when I mouse over it - not the kind of thing I'm inclined to click on to see where it might lead...

Not intuitive layout/design in my opinion.

The new site will be OK once you get used to it.
I have found that, on other updating of sites, it can be a bit of a havoc to start off with but once you are used to it, things seem be OK.
It's good to see the short forecast on the face page which makes sense, as the other site , you had to click onto the towns and cities to see the short forecast, whereas if people, want to just to see what the weather forecast is, NOW, it is THERE.
Would be nice to see a lightning strike page as well  ....but that's hoping?
...by the way, where is Christchurch Central. Are they doing recordings back at the Botanical Gardens instead of the automatic station at the airport?

Initial reaction, I don't like it. Much prefer the old style discreet bar which didn't sit on top of the map images in Radar and rain forecasts. At least the images are higher resolution, albiet on my setup at least, I'm no longer able to view all of the image at once. Also frustrating that they never put a link to the new page from old pages that were bookmarked. If this site can stay up during an event I'll be happy, that remains to be seen. Sadly I think the new site is resource hungrier and may not fair as well as the old version. Suspect it will be a lil while before the verdict is in.

I also emailed them at for me when I rotated my phone and so the screen would re orientate (portrait/landscape switch) the whole page would go blank (grey colour). I see now they have stopped it even trying to switch to a different orientaton . I am surprised something like that had not been picked up in the 2 years of beta by someone else??
and I also emailed them about the buttons being over the 120km rain radar at the bottom on mobile (compared to desktop)..that is yet to be fixed I see

Saw the same thing yesterday. But it seemed random because it didn't happen again after that

My understanding is that Christchurch central is the airport. Which is anything but central.

Perhaps they should use NIWA's famous Riccarton site ahahahah

That bar over the Rain Radar image is very intrusive.

In the top right-hand corner of the page, as viewed on my laptop, is a circle with two-and-a-half-lines across it and a star - does that symbol have a purpose? Tried googling, couldn't see anything similar.

*sigh*

They have been told that and for tomorrows forecast, it says 'today' It almost seems as though they have decided that they're happy with it so to hell with the public.
