MetService Website 2019
Bad forecasting for the east of the South Island for today.
Not changed all day on their website in their so called "Short" forecast.
I still wish they would drop the word "short" off their forecasts. Bad English. I find it annoying.
It's a Weather Forecast, not a "Short" forecast.
It's annoying to hear on RNZ, them saying "Here's the short forecast from MetService" when actually, it is the weather forecast.
Drizzly showers eased off here late morning but remaining claggy all day. We got about 6 minutes of sunshine this afternoon but then claggy conditions moving in this evening.

Re: MetService Website 2019
John, MetService's Short Forecast (aka short-range forecast) is so called because it's only for the next 24 hours or so (as opposed to their Extended Brief Forecast, which covers the 3 days after that), although I wouldn't put too much reliance on a 1 or 2 sentence forecast that covers most of the South Island apart from the west coast. Also bear in mind that all forecasts intended for radio broadcast, where text is usually limited to a strict word count, are inherently brief. However, you might find RNZ's Urban Forecast or Towns and Cities Forecast from MetService a little more detailed.
Terms like short-range forecast, very short-range forecast, extended forecast, long-range forecast and even nowcast are commonly used by meteorologists worldwide, although time-spans may vary a little from WMO definitions.

Re: MetService Website 2019
Dont let it worry ya John. Its not something I would even think about.
This has nothing to do with the MetService but the TV3 weather presenters, one week a temperature of 26deg is said to be HOT, then last night for Auckland, " cold southerly winds and you WILL reach 27deg",when has 27deg ever been cold.

I saw it. Two mini tornadoes hit the weather station at once and it got confused.

Re: MetService Website 2019
Looks like another one of MS's zombie sites to me, i.e. just forecasts, no obs…
And yet another phantom 413 km/h gust yesterday morning… this time at Farewell Spit.
Better alert the media! … lol

Re: MetService Website 2019
New coloured watches and warnings will be coming in a few weeks time - just ironing out some final issues and doing final end to end testing...need to make sure we get this right!
Then, the actual deployment will be weather dependent. We won't be deploying the changes (about 200 products/applications/services all need to be changed on the same day to pick up the new warning format) while a watch/warning is current.
Definitely on the home stretch now!

Re: MetService Website 2019
It would be great to see those mapped on the warnings and watches pages, rather than only the outlook page having a map alongside the text.
Sounds good though, I'm looking forward to seeing it when the weather is calmer...though the timing might not be great for that next week!

Re: MetService Website 2019
Just wait a few more weeks The new revamped metservice.com has graphical (colour-coded) watches and warnings.
This is due to be launched in Beta form around the end of this month.
At this stage, the new watches and warnings will be going live in the week commencing 20 May (weather dependent).

Re: MetService Website 2019
I agrre with Chris on this.
Also I reckon there should be a more thorough cancellation system on Weather warnings and watches by having them numbered as for future reference. ie, This watch cancells Number such and such watch, like, for example, they had in the railways with the Train Advice numbering system.

Re: MetService Website 2019
Hey Matt. Thanks for providing some info on timings re go live of upcoming changes.
Can you confirm if something is in scope for the release?
On the Severe Weather Outlook page, there is a map of NZ showing the impacted areas.
Similarly on the Thunderstorm Outlook page.
Yet on the Severe Weather Watch and Severe Weather Warnings pages, there is text only and no map.
Always thought this was a bit of a missed opportunity to make it a LOT clearer the areas that "may" or "will be" impacted, especially for visitors to NZ who do not know the regions of NZ very well (ask a tourist where the "The Tararua District" is for example )
I did email in a suggestion a number of years back, and the team said they would look to include in a future release. Fingers crossed it will be in this one!

Re: MetService Website 2019
As per my post just 4 posts up, the new revamped version of metservice.com is very imminent!
This will have graphical watches and warnings (amongst many other things) i.e. pan and zoomable maps with areas affected by the watches and warnings shaded on them.
Currently, this is due for release in Beta format around the end of this month.
At that point, I would encourage you all to check it out and let us know what you think!
