Meanwhile in mid-Canterbury we're back to December's weather.
Interesting to see all of the temperatures in the North Island however, stay cool up there!

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Interestingly it feels a few degrees cooler now but the temp is really no different. We had a NE breeze come in which lowered the dew point therefore making it feel cooler even tho it actually isn’t. Worth noting tho the dew point is still 21 just not the 23 we did have.

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Niwa tweet: "It soared to 32.9°C at Hamilton this afternoon, besting the old mark of 32.6°C set in March 2013". They are referring to the Ruakura site then. The older Ruakura station does have some temps up to 34.7C from the 1930s. That is a different station so they are technically correct. And I do have some suspicions about the 1934 to 1936 high readings- just because every summer month over that period saw low 30's , was the station being perfectly maintained over that period?

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Mine topped out at 32.8 , very similar to other PWS nearby, so recorded this event reasonably accurately.

Summer doesn't feel quite the same without the roar of cicadas... where are they? We're in peak summer and have had one of the hottest days in years...

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Was there a series of hot years in the 1930s? I keep reading about previous records and they’re often from the 30s.
I know there was a hot summer in I think 1935 or thereabouts, but yeah the 30s seem to come up again and again.
Interestingly (to me anyway), I think it was in 1939 when NZ has snowfalls across the country. I remember seeing a picture in an old book as a kid of snow on the road between Mot and Nelson. And I think Auckland got some snow too (not 100% on that).
Seems like an interesting decade weather-wise!

Of the 10 summers 1929-30 to 1938-39, 2 were hot - 1934/5 (record breaker till last year) and 1937/8. All of the other 8 were cooler than any of the decadal means from the 1950s on, and at least 5 of them would now be regarded as very cold. 8 of the 10 calendar years were cooler than any of the aforementioned decadal means.

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
David, the cicadas have finally kicked in here around Greytown. This has happened over the last few days with this heat it seems. And they are singing well into the evening. I am looking forward to presenting a cicada fly pattern to the trout in my local rivers! Apparently they love them - commonly used around the Queenstown area.

This warm episode has brought out the usual mob complaining about official temperature accuracy whilst placing temperature gauges in ridiculous places... saw someone on weatherwatch claiming Howick reached 40 today

Heard one in Geraldine on the Elm tree next door, one day last week.
Well it seems you guys in the north Island are getting the spell of the very warm weather than you usually find down here, this time of year. Hope it doesn't get into the mid thirties here before the southerly change on Friday.

Cicadas are starting to fire again here today, volume has been going up each day over the last few days. Strange its quiet down your way.

The forecast for High Country today from the MetS ( Fine apart from areas of morning and evening cloud. Wind at 1000m: Light winds. Wind at 2000m: Light winds. Free air freezing level: Above 4000 metres.) yet it's blowing a moderate NW with the odd stronger gust

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
This is an interesting general tool to use to come up with an initial idea what the daytime high might be. If you apply the dry adiabatic lapse rate (DALR) of 3 degrees per thousand feet to the 850 temperature and you assume it is at about 5000 feet, then 3x5=15+16=31C and 15+19=34C which is about what we heard for highs around the North Island yesterday. The DALR works for a deeply mixed boundary layer which is what you get with the strong heating of summertime. Of course the max temps will occur in areas of wind convergence. You might even add another degree to your result to account for a super adiabatic lapse rate at the surface from the strong insolation.

On the radio at 7am today a reporter said Hamilton was already boiling hot. No it was more like 20C! FFS

Mercury rising fast here, up to 29C now risen 2.5C in the last 20 minutes.
Real contrast to eastern beaches on 20C not sure how accurate that is, they should have a weather station at taylors mistake its very sheltered there from the NE most of the time.

Taylors Mistake faces into the NE, sheltered from the NW wind more like.
At 11.20 it was at 32.3deg, its such a hot wind
