Dew Point was pretty high overnight, stayed above 17.5 so not much sleep for me. Certainly feeling the higher than normal humidity in my neck of the woods, even though temps aren't that high at the mo. Looking forward to the end of this pattern for sure.

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Have to hand to the MetS, they forecast the temps pretty much spot on since Monday for here, only one degree short each day, they're saying 35 today, it may end up going bit higher than that as GFS models are showing 800pHa 22deg this afternoon.

Thanks for confirming the inversion layer NZstorm. That thick, dirty looking 'haze' yesterday was very noticeable looking towards the city from here. I'm inclined to think it was mostly pollution, because it seemed to be more concentrated at lower levels and over the city itself, whereas Aussie bushfire smoke tends to be more evenly dispersed over the entire sky…

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Not these latest fires in Tasmania, the smoke earlier in the week was very unevenly dispersed and quite streaky, that's why I believe that if it was smoke from over the ditch it may have circled back in from the east has had longer to become more evenly dispersed. As CT would say, "my two cents worth"

Plenty of smoke today over the Manawatu. Also plenty down Kapiti way, check out the webcam. Presumably it's Aussie smoke, being so widespread.

I reckon it's come up around from below the SI, seen clearly from satelliteharleyb wrote: ↑Thu 31/01/2019 12:14 Plenty of smoke today over the Manawatu. Also plenty down Kapiti way, check out the webcam. Presumably it's Aussie smoke, being so widespread.

Close to 36deg now with a NE wind, not a day for working outside if you can help it.

The weather station in the paddock at 14:20:00 is showing 36.9 which is an hour behind, my sensor that's in a screen saying 37.8deg.

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Another very warm day today. More humid today than yesterday so feels warmer.
My parents pool is no measuring 30*C and I think by tomorrow it will be up to 31 given yet another warm night on the way.
I am amazed at how much the grass has been fried these last couple days.

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Ive noticed that NIWA's Waiau site which had been rather suspect in the past has lately been consistent with Culverden, Hurunui and the Medbury sites, today it was climbing in temp a bit behind here for quite a few hours, the NW wind arrived here and it started to cool from the high of 37.4, my sensor 37.8deg at that same time, the wind hasn't reached Waiau and it reached 37.5 deg

NIWA reporting 38.5 in Hanmer. That puts it on a par with the water in the hotpools

Wonder how many people would be in the hot pools on a day like this.

Other records today include 37.9C at Medbury, 37.8C at Waiau and 35.0C at Lake Tekapo.

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
As Nev just mentioned NIWA has just announced that not only was Hamner Springs the hottest location in NZ today it also started off the coldest with a minimum of 9.9C, that’s a massive diurnal range though I do remember Eyre in WA recording a 6C minimum and 43C maximum a few years ago

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
As Steve's title for this topic goes, it was a warm period for many parts of the country.
Many records broken in the North Island.
Today, here, we climaxed at nearly 32C with warmer temperatures inland and also up North Canterbury way, around Richard's area. Warm night here with the temperture not dropping below 25C, with the occasional N to NW gust of wind.

Re: Extreme Heat to End January and Feb
Hamilton got a new record high of 32.9C. Richmond in Nelson got a new high of 33.8C.
No doubt there will be a few other spots that got records.
