NZ 24-hour and 48-hour rainfall records

Unread post by RWood »

Recently when analysing hourly records from the Cropp Waterfall site up to June 2015, I noticed that the cited records on a NIWA webpage of 758mm for 24-hour rainfalls and 1049mm for 48-hour rainfalls (both occurring at Cropp) are out of date.

A major rain event in central and south Westland on 1-2 January 2013 resulted in falls at Cropp Waterfall of 864.5mm from 1 Jan 2013:1200 to 2 Jan 2013:1200), and 1062.0mm from 1 Jan 2013:0400 to 3 Jan 2013:0400. I have sent a query to NIWA for confirmation and will be looking for post-June 2015 data to complete my search.

The monthly summary for January 2013 had this comment:

"On 2 January, extreme rain on the West Coast resulted in a washout of the Whanganui River Bridge on SH6 near Harihari. The bridge also carried the fibre optic cables, cutting all telecommunications to Westland. South Westland dairy farmers were forced to dump their milk. Cell towers at Fox Gracier, Franz Josef and Mt Hercules were also damaged. SH6 was also blocked by a slip between Inangahua and Westport in the lower Buller Gorge. Flooding closed sections of SH73 from Cass, through Arthur’s Pass to Otira."
