General February weather

Unread post by TonyT »

A windy day for many to start the month, will we see another "southerly buster" event push up the east coast of the South Island during the day?

Weather pattern is about to change in the next 7 days IMO. Hadley cell is now as south as it’s been since last summer, adjusting the subtropical ridge and giving an opportunity for tropical depressions to find an exit door towards the mid latitudes. At the same time, upper polar troughs dig into the ridge from the south and change the polar jet with sea surface temperatures simmering in the region. This will erupt around NZ towards mid Feb if the synoptics line up. Here is my 2 cents worth

GFS showing moist easterlies and upper level cooling next week, a recipe for showers and possible Tstorms, see how this looks in the models over the next few days, will be a change from the southwesterlies.

I see Pukaki was 29C today after a chilly low of 4C.

Hamilton looks to be the runner up with a high of 27C after a low of 17C.

And 19 is very warm considering how high Mt Cook airport is. The NW wind has just arrived here as well.

Feeling like a very hot one in the making today, as yet no sign of the dreaded easterly cooling factor. Cicada's going haywire in Hagley Park

I have experienced a warm fohn NW wind at Mt Cook at 8am and the area has miles of dry rocky river bed which will more easily heat up.

Rain chances for the North Island this week have been reducing, very dry conditions here but it is February.

If assume today's high at Ruakura was 29.0 (airport was 28.6 at 6pm), means average high for the last 7 days is 29.94! This run will extend to 9 days before it cools to a forecast 25 on Thursday.

Edit: Was eating dinner outside at 7:45pm, thinking gees, not cooling off yet. This is a Davis PWS just down the road. Wonder what caused the dewpoint to spike like that, that late. Other stations saw it to.

Certainly getting dry now. Pain that decent plume of moisture from the tropics this weekend is too far East to be of much use to anywhere except maybe East Cape to Gisborne now.

Musselburgh, Dunedin bests it - the 30-year means for both Oamaru AWS and Oamaru Aero AWS show their average Tmaxes are higher than Musselburgh's all year round, and by about 0.9C in December and January.
