It fined up this morning but there was thick fog down the road from Winchester through to Timaru according to the plumber who came this morning. High cloud cover coming in now with a NW Arch and a light southerly for much of the morning but I see that a moderate N to NE has just sprung up, lifting the temperature up as well.

Yes and you are right too, none of those central Marlborough storms either like there was last summer
Bring on top of the South Island storms.

Light NE breeze helping my PWS spike at 30.7c not long ago with a DP of 20c. Just checked my daily mean temp for Feb so far and it's 22.4c, tracking at nearly 3c above normal.

NIWA tweet gives the Valentine's Day high as 35.6°C at Cheviot. You are definitely getting a good run of high temperatures in NZ this summer.

Latest update on El Nino from NCEP
Due to the weak strength, widespread or significant global impacts are not anticipated.
However, the impacts often associated with El Niño may occur in some locations during the next few
months.
I thought January weather was El Nino like. I can't recall such a persistent SW in Auckland.

I hope Michael is coping with the pine needles ok, we all know how he hates those SW winds :-) Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously though, I hope he is ok, been a long time since we heard from him.

The MetS were pretty much spot on with there rainfall forecast overnight, they predicted 5mm and we got the 5mm. Ive been planting 250 small 10cm tall Eucalyptus trees in dug out depressions lined with second hand silage plastic, even though they got watered after planting a 5mm shower will give them a good drink

I was very much surprised at the front overnight looked for all money to be weakoning as it headed north like the last few fronts weve had, but managed about 3.5mm.
It was briefly quite heavy with some large sounding drops almost could of been hailstones, so some isolated areas would have some ok rainfall totals this morning.
However we need more than a rain sample, as it will be gone from the surface in days.

it's a voluntary project for our community hall as firewood income, we'll harvest them with the idea to copious manage them, first cut at 1.5m, thin out regrowth to 9 stems.

Such a good idea, how long before they will get to 1.5m generally?

Sorry to confuse, cut at 1.5 m above ground level at maybe 15 year old
