Sounds like a mini tornado to me

No, I would prefer it being a huge whirlwind, huge sounds more impressive than mini :-w

It's amazing that so much energy can get briefly concentrated like that.

It was associated with the arrival of the NW wind, but what amazed me was how fast it was traveling. Question- can the term tornado be used when its not accompanying a storm?

No. Sounds more like a dust-devil (aka willy-willy), which usually occur on hot, sunny days…

Maybe if there was convection you could call it a gustnado. But I agree it was likely a devil.

I remember a willy -willy type of thing come through our gates twixt the shelter belt at our property in West Melton, that stirred up a lot of dust but by the time I grabbed my camera, it was gone. #-o

I've seen many sea spray whirlwinds on windy days in Wellington many of the big ones can last for more than 30 seconds. Here's some in this video which also shows downdraft wind gusts.
Also seen some huge whirlwinds on the leading edge of intense southerly fronts on Wellington's harbor.

Looks like the warm weather is over for a while with the passage of the cold front here around 10am.
Been sitting on 16 to 17C, since the southerly front moved over and overcast/cloudy.
Wind went back to a fresh easterly from noon.
Rain should set in from tomorrow night and should be interesting to see how much we will get when these 'gold' southerlies move across on Sunday

Luckily for me this rain seems to be about 150km South of where the EC was putting it, even this morning.

The only form of gold this southerly will likely come in will be a single coat of low sheen enamel, just cant see a dust settler be worthy of been called anything else. :-s

Am observing a very nice line of billowy clouds to the south-east at present, also one towering up to the north above a layer of overcast :D
Cool morning, around 7°C

Those types of clouds out to the east in the early morning was often a sign that storms could develop inland later in the day.

Where are the signs of disturbed weather in the long range forecasts? Looks very stable to me. I thought this was going to be a change in pattern but doesn’t appear to be.

Down to 11.9C this morning, that's the lowest for the year so far. Feels like autumn is here.
